Part 1: Who Jesus Is
Why This Matters As You Read the "I AM" Statements
Now that the foundation is laid, everything changes.
When Jesus says "I AM the bread of life":
- This isn't a man telling you about God's provision
- This IS God revealing that HE is your provision
When Jesus says "I AM the light of the world":
- This isn't a prophet pointing you to truth
- This IS God declaring that HE is the truth
When Jesus says "I AM the door":
- This isn't a teacher showing you a path to God
- This IS God saying HE is the only access to salvation
When Jesus says "I AM the good shepherd":
- This isn't a metaphor about God's care
- This IS God Himself, the Shepherd of Israel (Psalm 23; Ezekiel 34), come in the flesh
When Jesus says "I AM the resurrection and the life":
- This isn't someone with power over death
- This IS God, the Creator of life, who alone has authority over death
When Jesus says "I AM the way, the truth, and the life":
- This isn't a guide showing you to God
- This IS God saying "You want to find God? You're looking at Him."
When Jesus says "I AM the true vine":
- This isn't a parable about spiritual growth
- This IS God revealing that union with HIM is the source of all spiritual life
Each "I AM" Statement Is a Double Revelation
As you read the statements that follow, you're encountering two layers simultaneously:
Layer 1: Your Need and His Provision
- I am hungry → He is the Bread
- I am in darkness → He is the Light
- I am lost → He is the Way
- I am dying → He is the Resurrection
Layer 2: His Divine Identity
- "I AM" = I am YHWH, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
- Every statement is a claim to deity
- Every provision flows from His divine nature
You're not just learning about a helpful teacher or a powerful prophet. You're encountering the self-revelation of the living God.
