Vol I: A Handbook for Disciples in Spiritual Warfare

Part 10: You Can't Do This Alone

(The "One Another" Commands and the Necessity of Community)

You're trying to follow Jesus. You read Scripture. You pray. You confess sin. You're doing all the "spiritual disciplines." But you're doing it alone. No church. No accountability. No community. Just you and God.

And you're struggling. Because you can't follow Jesus alone.

"Lone Ranger Christianity" isn't biblical. It's not how God designed discipleship. You need other believers — not as nice-to-haves, but as necessities.

Why Community Matters

You're Part of a Body (1 Corinthians 12:12–27)

For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body – though many – are one body, so too is Christ.

— 1 Corinthians 12:12 (NET)

You're not an isolated individual, self-sufficient, or able to function independently. You're a member of a body — dependent on other members, and necessary to other members. "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you'" (1 Corinthians 12:21). You need other believers. They need you.

Iron Sharpens Iron (Proverbs 27:17)

As iron sharpens iron, so a person sharpens his friend.

— Proverbs 27:17 (NET)

You grow through accountability (someone calling out your sin), encouragement (someone building you up), teaching (learning from those ahead of you), and serving (using your gifts to help others). You can't sharpen yourself. You need friction from other believers.

Where Two or Three Gather (Matthew 18:20)

For where two or three are assembled in my name, I am there among them.

— Matthew 18:20 (NET)

Jesus promises His presence when believers gather. Not just when you're alone — when you're together. Corporate worship, prayer, fellowship — these aren't optional extras. They're how Jesus meets His people.

The "One Another" Commands

The New Testament is full of commands that require community. You can't obey them alone.

1. Love One Another (John 13:34)

I give you a new commandment — to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

— John 13:34 (NET)

You can't love "one another" alone. You need other believers to love.

2. Bear One Another's Burdens (Galatians 6:2)

Share your struggles. Help others with theirs. Don't pretend you have it all together. You can't do this in isolation.

3. Confess Your Sins to One Another (James 5:16)

Not just confessing to God (though that's primary) — also confess to trusted believers. Why? It kills pride (admitting sin to another person is humbling), brings healing (light dispels darkness), and provides accountability (they can check in on you). You can't confess to "one another" if you're alone.

4. Encourage One Another (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Everyone struggles. Everyone needs encouragement. You can't encourage yourself into health. You need others to speak truth, hope, and gospel into your life.

5. Serve One Another (Galatians 5:13)

You were saved to serve, not to be served. But you can't serve "one another" alone. You need a community to serve.
