Vol I: A Handbook for Disciples in Spiritual Warfare

Part 6: The Armor of God — Your Weapons for Warfare

Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.

— Ephesians 6:10–12 (NET)

This is the reality: you're in a war.

Your enemy is not your liberal neighbor, the school board, or your agnostic child. Your enemy is the adversary and his demons — working through people and institutions. The battle is spiritual. Your weapons must be too.

The Six Pieces of Armor

1. The Belt of Truth (Ephesians 6:14)

"Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth."

What it is: God's truth — Scripture, embodied in Christ.

Why you need it: Lies are the enemy's primary weapon. If you don't know truth, you'll fall for lies.

How it's attacked today:

  • "Your truth vs. my truth" (moral relativism)
  • Redefining words — marriage, gender, love, justice
  • Media propaganda

How you wear it:

  • Know Scripture (you can't spot a counterfeit if you don't know the real thing)
  • Call lies "lies" (don't call evil good — Isaiah 5:20)
  • Refuse to compromise (don't bend truth to fit culture)

Action: Memorize one verse this week that addresses a current cultural lie. (Example: Genesis 1:27 for gender confusion.)

2. The Breastplate of Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14)

"...and having put on the breastplate of righteousness."

What it is: Right standing with God (imputed) plus right living (practiced).

Why you need it: Hypocrisy disqualifies your witness. Secret sin gives the enemy a foothold.

How it's attacked today:

  • Porn, greed, bitterness, pride
  • The enemy accuses: "You're no better than them"

How you wear it:

  • Live what you preach (integrity)
  • Confess sin quickly (don't let it fester)
  • Walk in holiness (1 Peter 1:16 — "Be holy, for I am holy")

Action: Is there hidden sin? Confess it this week — to God, and if needed, to a trusted believer.

3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (Ephesians 6:15)

"...and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace."

What it is: Readiness to proclaim the good news.

Why you need it: You're on a mission, not a retreat.

How it's attacked today:

  • Fear of man ("I don't want to offend")
  • Cowardice ("I'll stay quiet to keep the peace")

How you wear it:

  • Be ready to give an answer (1 Peter 3:15)
  • Share Jesus, not just opinions
  • Bring peace by bringing the gospel (not by compromising truth)

Action: This week, share the gospel with one person — even if they reject it.

4. The Shield of Faith (Ephesians 6:16)

"In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one."

What it is: Trust in God's promises and character.

Why you need it: To extinguish doubt, fear, discouragement.

Flaming darts include:

  • "Nothing's changing — why bother?"
  • "They're winning, you're losing"
  • "Is God really in control?"

How you wear it:

  • Remember: God is sovereign. Jesus has already won. The gates of Hades will not prevail.
  • Stand on promises, not circumstances (2 Corinthians 5:7 — "We walk by faith, not by sight")

Action: When a "flaming dart" hits this week — doubt, fear, discouragement — speak a promise of God out loud to extinguish it.

5. The Helmet of Salvation (Ephesians 6:17)

"...and take the helmet of salvation."

What it is: Assurance of your salvation and hope of future glory.

Why you need it: Protects your mind from despair.

How it's attacked today:

  • Hopelessness about culture ("We've already lost")
  • Forgetting that Christ wins in the end

How you wear it:

  • Remember: you're saved, sealed, secure (Ephesians 1:13–14)
  • Your citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20)
  • Christ is returning (Revelation 22:20)

Action: This week, when despair hits, remind yourself: "I'm saved. Christ wins. This isn't the end."

6. The Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17)

"...and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

What it is: Scripture — your offensive weapon.

Why you need it: It's the only offensive piece of armor.

How it's attacked today:

  • Biblical illiteracy
  • Reinterpreting Scripture to fit culture
  • Ignoring "uncomfortable" parts

How you wield it:

  • Read daily
  • Memorize (so it's accessible in battle)
  • Speak it ("It is written..." — Matthew 4:4, 7, 10)
  • Use it to demolish arguments (2 Corinthians 10:4–5)

Action: Memorize one verse this week that addresses a specific battle you're facing.
