Part 8: Engaging the World
Chapter 1: When Your Child Asks About Pronouns (1 of 3)
Gender Ideology and the Battle for Reality
Your eight-year-old comes home from school and says, "Mom, my teacher said we should ask everyone their pronouns. What are mine?"
Or your teenager announces, "Some of my friends are trans now. Their parents are helping them transition. Why won't you let me explore my identity?"
Or you discover your child's school has a policy to use a student's "preferred name and pronouns" without informing parents.
You're not imagining things. This is real, it's accelerating, and it's coming for your children.
But before panic sets in, remember: the people promoting this — teachers, administrators, even some parents — aren't primarily your enemy. Most truly believe they're being compassionate. They've been deceived by a lie so beautiful and seductive that opposing it gets you labeled hateful. the enemy works that way: he wraps rebellion against God in the language of love.
Your job isn't to hate these people. It's to save your children from the lie, speak truth into the chaos, and trust God with outcomes you can't control. You're planting seeds of truth in ground the enemy has poisoned. Some seeds will take root immediately. Some won't sprout for years. Some may never grow — but you plant anyway, because that's what faithfulness looks like.
And here's what you need to hear: you don't have to be a perfect parent to do this well. You're broken too. The Spirit is mending your heart even as you're guiding your children's. You're limping toward Jesus, and that's okay — teach your kids to limp alongside you.
What's Actually Happening: The Lie Behind Gender Ideology
Gender ideology isn't just "being nice to confused kids." It's a comprehensive worldview that makes several specific claims: biological sex is assigned, not observed ("assigned male/female at birth"); gender is a feeling, not a physical reality ("gender identity"); your inner sense of self trumps physical reality ("trans women are women"); refusing to affirm someone's identity is violence ("misgendering" as harm); children can know they're "born in the wrong body" (pediatric transition); and dissent is hatred (disagreement = transphobia = bigotry).
The core claim: you have the right — even the duty — to define your own reality, and everyone else must participate in your self-definition.
This isn't new. It's the oldest lie, repackaged. The serpent told Eve:
"You will be like divine beings who know good and evil."
— Genesis 3:5 (NET)
Gender ideology tells your child the same thing: you can redefine your own nature, and everyone else must affirm the redefinition.
Why It Spread So Fast: The Enemy's Strategy
Twenty years ago, this ideology was fringe. Today, it's mainstream. The progression was deliberate.
Step 1: Compassion as a weapon. The movement weaponized genuine compassion. Who doesn't want to help a suffering child? The message became: "Trans kids are killing themselves because of rejection. If you don't affirm them, their blood is on your hands." The emotional blackmail works. Parents, teachers, and even churches capitulated because they couldn't bear the thought of causing harm. But the statistics behind the "suicide epidemic" narrative have been debunked repeatedly — trans-identified youth have elevated mental health struggles, but affirmation doesn't resolve them, and in many cases exacerbates underlying issues. A 2020 review in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy found no reliable evidence that "affirmation-only" approaches reduce suicide risk, and a 2021 Swedish study showed that sex-reassignment surgery correlated with increased suicide attempts long-term, not decreased. Yet the "affirm or they'll die" message persists because it shuts down debate.
Step 2: Redefine key terms. Love became affirming whatever someone feels. Hate became disagreeing with someone's self-perception. Harm became saying something that makes someone uncomfortable. Compassion became celebrating confusion as identity. Bigotry became holding to biological reality. Once the definitions shifted, Christians who held to biblical truth were automatically branded hateful — even when they genuinely loved the people they disagreed with.
Step 3: Capture the institutions. Schools with curriculum, bathroom policies, and pronoun mandates — often without parental notification. Medicine with "affirmative care" as the only acceptable approach, and dissenting doctors silenced. Law with policies making it illegal to "discriminate" based on gender identity. Media with sympathetic portrayals and detransitioners ignored or vilified. Corporations with DEI training, Pride celebrations, and funding for activist groups. Parents woke up one day to find the culture had shifted underneath them — and their kids were being catechized into this new religion at school.
Step 4: Target the children. Why children? Because they're malleable, trusting, and desperate to belong. Adolescence is already a time of identity confusion. The ideology offers an identity (you're not just awkward — you're trans!), a community (instant belonging in LGBTQ+ clubs and online spaces), a cause (you're brave, stunning, fighting oppression), and attention (from peers, teachers, activists). The result is social contagion. Especially among teenage girls, "rapid-onset gender dysphoria" has skyrocketed — friend groups where multiple girls suddenly identify as trans, often with no prior history of gender distress. Researcher Dr. Lisa Littman's 2018 study documented this phenomenon: clusters of adolescents suddenly announcing trans identities after immersion in social media or peer groups, suggesting social influence rather than innate identity. Her work was viciously attacked, but the pattern is undeniable to anyone watching.
God's Design: What the Bible Actually Says
Here's where you plant the seed of truth. Your child needs to hear this — not once, but repeatedly, until it takes root.
1. Male and Female He Created Them
God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them.
— Genesis 1:27 (NET)
God didn't "assign" sex. He created two sexes, biologically distinct, complementary, and both reflecting His image. This isn't arbitrary or oppressive — it's the foundation of human flourishing. Your body isn't a mistake or an accident. Being male or female is good (Genesis 1:31). You don't get to choose or change it — God already chose for you, and His choice is perfect.
2. God Made You in the Womb
Certainly you made my mind and heart; you wove me together in my mother's womb. I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing.
— Psalm 139:13–14 (NET)
