Part 8: Engaging the World
Chapter 3: Abortion — Calling Child Sacrifice What It Is (2 of 2)
You know. You can't claim ignorance. Speak.
2. Support pregnancy centers (not just protest abortion clinics). Pregnancy centers provide free ultrasounds so women see their babies, offer material support (diapers, formula, clothes), connect women with resources (housing, job training, adoption services), and counsel with truth and compassion. They save lives — not by protesting, but by offering alternatives. Support them financially, practically, and publicly. If you're "pro-life" but not supporting pregnancy centers, you're pro-birth, not pro-life. True pro-life means caring for mother and child, supporting adoption, helping single moms, and building a culture that values life from conception to natural death.
3. Vote pro-life — but don't stop there. Vote for candidates and policies that restrict abortion, defund Planned Parenthood, support pregnancy centers, and make adoption easier. But don't think voting is enough. Political change matters, but heart change matters more. Laws won't save babies if the culture still celebrates killing them. Change hearts through the gospel. Support women personally. Build communities that value children.
4. Adopt or foster if you're able. Adoption and foster care are gospel work: you're imaging God (who adopted you — Ephesians 1:5), rescuing the vulnerable, and proving children are blessings, not burdens.
5. Offer grace to women who've had abortions. Abortion is murder. But many women who've had abortions are victims too — lied to, pressured, desperate. They need truth (abortion was wrong), grace (the gospel covers even this sin), and healing (post-abortive counseling, forgiveness, restoration). Don't treat them as irredeemable. Paul was a murderer. David orchestrated Uriah's death. Peter denied Jesus. All were restored.
If you've had an abortion: confess it, receive forgiveness (1 John 1:9), get counseling, let God redeem your story. You're not beyond His grace.
Real Examples: Lives Saved and Lost
Case Study 1: The Ultrasound That Changed Everything. A 19-year-old college student, pregnant and terrified, with a boyfriend pressuring her to abort. A friend convinced her to get a free ultrasound first. She saw her baby at eight weeks, heartbeat visible, and started crying: "I can't do this. That's my baby." She canceled the abortion appointment, had the baby, placed her for adoption with a Christian couple. Ten years later, the birth mother says it was the hardest and best decision of her life. The lesson: sometimes all it takes is seeing. Ultrasounds save lives.
Case Study 2: The Woman Who Regrets. She had an abortion at 22, told it was "no big deal," assured it was just "tissue." What followed: relief, then numbness, then creeping guilt, then crushing grief. Fifteen years later she's a Christian who's confessed and received forgiveness — but still grieves the child she killed. She now volunteers at a pregnancy center, begging women not to make her mistake. The lesson: abortion wounds don't heal with time. Only the gospel heals. But even forgiven sin has scars.
Case Study 3: The Couple Who Chose Life. Married couple with two kids, struggling financially, surprise pregnancy. Doctor suggested abortion "given the circumstances." Their decision: "We don't kill our children just because life is hard." Twelve years later, their "surprise" is the joy of their family. The lesson: children are always blessings, even when circumstances are hard.
Action Steps: What You Can Do This Week
- Educate yourself on the reality of abortion. Watch a video of what abortion actually does (The Silent Scream, Eclipse of Reason). If you can't watch it without horror, you shouldn't support it.
- Support a pregnancy center — find one in your area. Donate. Volunteer. Spread the word.
- Talk to your kids about abortion: life begins at conception, abortion kills, children are blessings, they should speak for the voiceless.
- Pray for abortion to end — for women in crisis pregnancies, for abortion workers to quit, for judges and legislators, for hearts to change.
- If you've had an abortion, seek healing. Confess it. Receive forgiveness. Get post-abortive counseling. Let God redeem your story.
The Hope: God Can Redeem Even This
Abortion is murder. But the gospel is more powerful than murder. Paul killed Christians. David orchestrated Uriah's death. Both were forgiven and used mightily by God. The gospel covers this sin. Confess it. Repent. Receive forgiveness. Let God heal you. Use your story to save others.
And for those fighting abortion: don't grow weary. You're fighting for the most vulnerable image-bearers on earth. This is kingdom work. Speak. Support. Vote. Adopt. Pray. And trust that the same God who forms babies in the womb can change the hearts of those who want to kill them.
