Part 8: Engaging the World
Chapter 2: The Family Under Attack (1 of 2)
Rebuilding What the Enemy Has Torn Down
Your teenage son comes home and mentions casually that his friend's parents are divorcing — the third divorce in his friend group this year. Your daughter asks why her classmate has "two moms." You're scrolling social media and see yet another article celebrating "child-free by choice" as enlightened liberation.
You're watching the systematic dismantling of God's first institution: the family. This isn't random cultural drift. It's strategic spiritual warfare. the enemy knows that if he can destroy the family, he can cripple the church, fracture society, and leave children unmoored and vulnerable. And he's been remarkably successful.
But before we talk about fighting back, we need to understand what we're actually fighting for. You can't rebuild what you don't understand. And too many Christians are trying to defend "traditional family values" without knowing why God designed family the way He did.
God's Design: Why Family Matters
Marriage wasn't a human invention that needed updating. It's God's design from creation.
One Man, One Woman, For Life
Jesus affirmed the design from creation:
"Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."
— Matthew 19:4–6 (NET)
Permanence matters — "till death do us part" isn't a quaint tradition, it's the design. Children need stability. Society needs covenants that hold. The union is sexual and exclusive. One man, one woman, becoming "one flesh" — not roommates, not friends with benefits, not serial monogamy. Covenant. This reflects Christ and the Church: Paul says marriage is a picture of Christ's relationship with His bride (Ephesians 5:25–32). Divorce distorts that picture. Adultery mocks it. Redefinition erases it.
Sex Within Marriage Only
"Let marriage be honored among all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers" (Hebrews 13:4). Sex isn't recreational. It's covenantal. It binds two people together in a way God designed to exist only within the protective boundary of lifelong commitment. Outside that boundary: fornication trains you to connect and disconnect (the opposite of covenant); adultery betrays covenant; pornography perverts the design into selfish consumption; homosexual practice rejects the male-female complementarity God built into creation. The sexual revolution didn't liberate anyone. It enslaved millions to addiction, STDs, abortion, fatherlessness, and deep relational brokenness.
Children as Blessing, Not Burden
Yes, sons are a gift from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Sons born during one's youth are like arrows in a warrior's hand. How blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!
— Psalm 127:3–5 (NET)
The culture says: "Have kids if you want, but they'll ruin your life, drain your resources, and limit your potential." God says: blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them. Children are gifts from God, the primary way God's image multiplies on earth, your legacy, and arrows you're sharpening to launch into the future.
Parents Teach Children
God gave children to parents — not to the state, not to schools, not even to the church. Those institutions can assist, but the primary responsibility is yours. You can't outsource discipleship. You can't assume school will teach them morality. You can't rely on youth group to form their faith.
Fathers Lead and Protect
"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). Fatherlessness is one of the strongest predictors of poverty, crime, academic failure, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, and incarceration:
- 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes
- 90% of homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes
- 85% of children with behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes
- 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes
- 75% of adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes
- 85% of youths in prison grew up in a fatherless home
Children need fathers. Not just "parent figures." Fathers. Men who lead, protect, provide, discipline, and model godliness.
The Enemy's Strategy: How Did We Get Here?
The assault on the family was methodical, generational, and devastatingly effective.
Step 1: Separate sex from marriage (The Contraception Revolution). Before the 1960s, sex outside marriage carried real consequences. After widespread contraception, the link between sex and procreation was severed. Fornication was normalized. The result: STDs skyrocketed, abortion became backup contraception, cohabitation replaced marriage, serial monogamy became the norm. The lie: "You can have sex without consequences." The truth: you can't. Sin always has consequences — physical, emotional, spiritual.
Step 2: Separate marriage from procreation (children become optional). Why get married if you can have sex without it? Then: why have kids if they're just burdens? Plummeting birth rates, "child-free by choice" celebrated, pets replacing children. The lie: "You'll be happier without kids." The truth: childlessness leads to long-term emptiness, societal collapse, and the rejection of God's design for human flourishing.
Step 3: Separate children from parents (state indoctrination). Once children were seen as burdens, the culture shifted toward "let someone else raise them" — daycare from infancy, schools teaching values that contradict parents, gender ideology without parental notification, the state claiming authority over children's "best interests." The lie: "Experts know better than you." The truth: no one loves your children like you do.
Step 4: Redefine family (any configuration is valid). If sex, marriage, and children are all disconnected, "family" becomes infinitely malleable. Two moms, two dads, polyamory, "chosen family," single parent by choice. The lie: "Love is all that matters. Any loving configuration is a family." The truth: love matters, but structure matters too. Children thrive in stable, two-parent, mother-father homes. Every deviation increases risk. The data is overwhelming: children in intact, married, two-parent homes outperform children in every other configuration on virtually every metric — emotionally, academically, economically, relationally. This doesn't mean single parents can't raise great children. Many do, heroically. But God's design is best, and deviations come with costs.
Step 5: Destroy fatherhood (the fatherlessness epidemic). The enemy knows: destroy fatherhood, and you cripple a generation. Welfare policies incentivized single motherhood; no-fault divorce made commitment optional; cultural mockery of fathers accelerated; the redefinition of family declared fathers optional. The result: millions of children growing up without fathers, vulnerable to every predator — human and spiritual.
Your Response: Fighting for Your Family
1. Fight for your own marriage. If you're married: your marriage is under attack. the enemy wants you divorced, bitter, and modeling dysfunction for your children.
