Part 8: Engaging the World
Chapter 7: Health, Food, and the Body (2 of 2)
2. Reject pharmakeia. Don't rely on drugs to fix problems caused by lifestyle. If you have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity: change your diet first, exercise, lose weight. Many conditions reverse. Medications may be necessary sometimes — but they shouldn't be the first resort. And recreational drugs? Reject them entirely. Marijuana isn't harmless — it impairs, addicts, and represents rebellion. Alcohol: not sinful in moderation (Jesus drank wine), but drunkenness is sin (Ephesians 5:18). If you can't control it, abstain.
3. Move your body. "Physical exercise has some value" (1 Timothy 4:8). You were designed to move — walk, lift heavy things, work physically. Modern life is sedentary. Fight that. Walk daily (30+ minutes), lift weights (two to three times per week), play with your kids, do physical work. This isn't about vanity. It's about stewardship.
4. Rest — sleep and Sabbath. God designed rest. Seven to nine hours of sleep per night, consistent schedule, no screens before bed. One day per week: rest from work, worship, spend time with family, trust God to provide. Rest isn't laziness. It's obedience.
5. Don't make health an idol. Steward your body, but don't worship it. Health is a tool to serve God, not the goal. Orthorexia (obsessive healthy eating), gym addiction, body image as identity — that's idolatry. Your body will fail eventually. It's dying. That's not the tragedy. Living for your body is. Steward it well. But keep perspective.
Real Examples: Healing and Destruction
Case Study 1: The Man Who Reversed Diabetes. A 52-year-old man with type 2 diabetes for eight years, on insulin and Metformin, obese at 280 pounds. His doctor's warning: "You're headed for amputation and blindness." His decision: cut sugar and processed carbs, eat meat, vegetables, and healthy fats, walk daily. One year later: lost 80 pounds, off all medications, diabetes reversed. The lesson: food is medicine. Processed food is poison. Change your diet, change your life.
Case Study 2: The Family That Stopped Eating Processed Food. Family of five — kids constantly sick, parents exhausted and overweight, eating mostly boxed and frozen meals. They committed to real food, meal planning, cooking at home, and cutting sugar. Six months later: kids healthier with fewer colds and more energy, parents having lost weight, everyone sleeping better. The lesson: real food is more expensive and takes more work. It's worth it.
Case Study 3: The Man Destroyed by Opioids. Injured his back at work, prescribed opioids, got addicted. Prescription ran out; he started buying pills illegally, eventually moved to heroin, then fentanyl. Lost his job and family. Overdosed twice. Finally got clean in rehab. Three years sober, rebuilding his life, and warning others about opioids. The lesson: pharmakeia destroys. Be cautious with any mind-altering substance.
Action Steps: What You Can Do This Week
- Audit your pantry — read ingredient labels. If it has seed oils, high fructose corn syrup, or ingredients you can't pronounce, throw it out and replace with real food.
- Cut one processed food — pick the worst offender (soda, chips, frozen meals), stop buying it, replace with real food.
- Start moving — if you're sedentary, start walking 20 minutes per day, every day.
- Fix your sleep — go to bed at the same time every night, get seven to eight hours, no screens an hour before bed.
- If you're on medications, ask your doctor: "Can I reverse this condition through diet and exercise?" If they won't discuss it, consider finding a doctor who will.
The Hope: God Can Heal
Your body is broken. We live in a fallen world. Disease happens. Disability happens. Death happens. But God designed your body to heal when you stop poisoning it. Many conditions reverse with real food, movement, rest, and avoiding toxins. Not all — some diseases don't reverse, some require medication, some end in death. But many do. Steward your temple well. Trust God with outcomes. Your body is temporary. But while you have it, honor God with it.
