Michlaude Discipleship Project

Part 1: Who Jesus Is

"I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6)

The Context

Jesus was preparing the disciples for His departure. He told them, "There are many dwelling places in my Father's house. Otherwise, I would have told you, because I am going away to make ready a place for you" (John 14:2 NET).

Thomas said, "Lord, we don't know where you are going. How can we know the way?"

Jesus answered:

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

— John 14:6 (NET)

What This Reveals About Jesus

This is perhaps the most comprehensive "I AM" statement. Three absolute claims in one sentence:

First: "I AM the way." Not "I'll show you the way" or "I'll point you to the way." I AM the way. The path to God doesn't go around Jesus — it goes through Jesus.

"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved."

— Acts 4:12 (NET)

Second: "I AM the truth." Not "I teach the truth" or "I know the truth." I AM truth personified. All truth is grounded in Him. All true statements reflect His character. All reality finds its meaning in Him.

"…in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

— Colossians 2:3 (NET)

Third: "I AM the life." We've covered this already, but it bears repeating: He is the source of all life — physical, spiritual, eternal.

And the conclusion: "No one comes to the Father except through me."

This isn't one option among many. This is the only option. Apart from Jesus, there is no access to God. None.

This is a divine claim. Only God can claim to be the exclusive path to God. Only God can claim to BE truth itself. Only God can claim to BE life itself.

What This Reveals About You

Apart from Christ, you are lost, deceived, and dead.

  • Lost: You don't know the way to God. You're wandering.
  • Deceived: You don't know truth. You believe lies — about God, about yourself, about reality.
  • Dead: You don't have life. You exist, but you're separated from the Source of life.

But in Christ, all three are yours:

  • The Way — The path is clear. Access to God is open.
  • The Truth — Reality is revealed. Deception is exposed.
  • The Life — True life — eternal, abundant, meaningful — floods in.

How This Changes How You Follow Him

Stop seeking truth anywhere else. Jesus IS the truth.

This is critical for the cultural battles you're facing.

When the world says:

  • "Your truth, my truth" → You say: "No. Jesus IS truth. Truth is objective, universal, unchanging."
  • "All religions lead to God" → You say: "No. Jesus is THE way. No one comes to the Father but through Him."
  • "Follow your heart" → You say: "No. My heart deceives me (Jeremiah 17:9). I follow Jesus, who IS the truth."
  • "Live your truth" → You say: "No. I live THE truth, which is Jesus."

How this applies in parenting:

Teach your children early: There is such a thing as truth. It's not subjective. It's not personal. It's grounded in the character of God revealed in Jesus.

When your child comes home from school and says, "My teacher says everyone's truth is valid," you say: "Your teacher is deceived. Truth isn't something you create — it's something you discover. And Jesus IS the truth. When someone contradicts Him, they're wrong — no matter how sincere they are."

Application this week:

Where are you treating something other than Jesus as your source of truth?

  • News media?
  • Political leaders?
  • Education?
  • Feelings?
  • "Experts"?

Identify it. Then repent. Return to Jesus as THE truth.
