Part 1: Who Jesus Is

How Does the New Birth Happen?

The new birth is a sovereign work of God. You can't make yourself be born again any more than you could make yourself be born physically.

But God uses means: repentance and faith.

1. Repentance

"Therefore, although God has overlooked such times of ignorance, he now commands all people everywhere to repent."

— Acts 17:30 (NET)

Repentance means:

  • Acknowledging you're a sinner. Not just "I've made mistakes" but "I've rebelled against God. I deserve His judgment."
  • Turning from sin. Not just feeling bad about it, but changing direction. You were walking toward sin; now you turn and walk toward God.
  • Grieving over your sin. This is godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10) — not just regret over consequences, but grief that you've offended God.

What repentance is NOT:

  • Cleaning yourself up before coming to God (you can't — you're dead)
  • Promising to never sin again (you will sin again — but your posture toward sin changes)
  • Earning God's favor (repentance is a gift — Acts 11:18)

2. Faith

"For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast."

— Ephesians 2:8–9 (NET)

Faith means:

  • Believing the gospel. Jesus died for your sins. He rose from the dead. He's Lord. (Romans 10:9)
  • Trusting in Christ alone for salvation. Not Christ + your good works. Not Christ + your baptism. Not Christ + your religious activity. Christ alone.
  • Submitting to Jesus as Lord. Not just Savior (saving you from hell) but Lord (ruling over your life).

"Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

— Romans 10:9 (NET)

What faith is NOT:

  • Intellectual agreement without heart change (the demons believe — James 2:19)
  • A one-time decision that doesn't affect your life (faith without works is dead — James 2:17)
  • Fire insurance (trying to escape hell without actually loving Jesus)
