Part 1: Who Jesus Is
The Pharisees Understood Exactly What He Was Claiming
Modern readers often miss what Jesus' original audience caught immediately. The Pharisees knew the Scriptures. They knew the name of God. And they knew Jesus was claiming it.
John 8:58–59 — "Before Abraham Was, I AM"
The context: Jesus was debating with the Jews about Abraham. They claimed Abraham as their father. Jesus said Abraham rejoiced to see His day.
They scoffed: "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
Jesus answered:
"I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!"
— John 8:58 (NET)
The response was immediate:
Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out from the temple area.
— John 8:59 (NET)
Why did they pick up stones?
Because under Leviticus 24:16, the penalty for blasphemy was death by stoning. They understood. Jesus wasn't just saying "I existed before Abraham" (though that's true). He was saying "I AM the eternal God. I AM YHWH. I AM the One who spoke to Moses."
Notice: He didn't say "I WAS before Abraham." He said "I AM." Present tense. Eternal existence. The name of God.
John 10:30–33 — "I and the Father Are One"
"The Father and I are one." The Jewish leaders picked up rocks again to stone him. Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many good deeds from the Father. For which one of them are you going to stone me?" The Jewish leaders replied, "We are not going to stone you for a good deed but for blasphemy, because you, a man, are claiming to be God."
— John 10:30–33 (NET)
They explicitly stated what they heard: "You're claiming to be God."
Jesus didn't correct them. He didn't say, "No, no, you misunderstand — I'm just a prophet." He doubled down by quoting Psalm 82 and claiming to be the Son of God whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world.
Mark 14:61–64 — "I AM" Before the High Priest
At Jesus' trial before the Sanhedrin, the high priest asked Him directly: "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
Jesus answered:
"I am, and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "Why do we still need witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy!"
— Mark 14:62–64 (NET)
Tearing garments was the traditional Jewish response to hearing blasphemy. The high priest knew exactly what Jesus claimed.
Notice three things:
- "I AM" — The divine name
- "Son of Man" — The divine figure from Daniel 7:13–14 who receives an everlasting kingdom
- "Sitting at the right hand of Power" — Equal with God, sharing His throne
This wasn't ambiguous. This was an unmistakable claim to be God.
The Sanhedrin convicted Him of blasphemy and handed Him to Pilate. The charge to Rome was different (claiming to be King of the Jews), but among themselves, the Jewish leaders knew: He claimed to be God. That's why He had to die.
