Part 1: Who Jesus Is
"I AM the Resurrection and the Life" (John 11:25)
The Context
Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus, had died. His sisters Martha and Mary had sent word to Jesus: "Lord, the one you love is sick" (John 11:3).
But Jesus delayed. He stayed where He was for two more days. By the time He arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been dead for four days (John 11:17).
Martha met Jesus on the road and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died" (John 11:21).
Jesus replied: "Your brother will come back to life again."
Martha said, "I know that he will come back to life again in the resurrection at the last day."
Jesus said to her:
"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
— John 11:25–26 (NET)
Then He went to the tomb and raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:43–44).
What This Reveals About Jesus
First: He has absolute power over death. Not just the ability to raise the dead — He IS the resurrection. Death doesn't master Him. He masters death.
"Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"
— 1 Corinthians 15:54–55 (NET)
Second: He is life itself. Not just "alive" — the source of all life.
"All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind."
— John 1:3–4 (NET)
Everything that lives, lives because Jesus sustains it. He is the fountainhead of life.
Third: He defeats your greatest enemy. Death is "the last enemy" (1 Corinthians 15:26). It's the thing every human fears, the thing no human can defeat.
Jesus defeated it. Not just for Himself (His own resurrection) but for all who believe in Him. "The one who believes in me will live even if he dies."
Fourth: He promises eternal life. "The one who lives and believes in me will never die" (John 11:26).
You'll experience physical death (unless Christ returns first). But true death — spiritual death, separation from God — cannot touch you.
Fifth: This is a divine claim. Only God has power over life and death.
"See now that I, indeed I, am he, and there is no other god besides me. I kill and give life, I smash and I heal, and none can resist my power."
— Deuteronomy 32:39 (NET)
When Jesus says "I AM the resurrection and the life," He's claiming to be the God who kills and makes alive, the sovereign Lord over death.
What This Reveals About You
You are dead (or dying).
Physically: Every breath brings you closer to the grave. Your body is decaying. Death is coming. You cannot stop it.
Spiritually (if you're apart from Christ): You're already dead.
"And although you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you formerly lived according to this world's present path…"
— Ephesians 2:1–2 (NET)
Dead doesn't mean non-existent. It means separated from the source of life. Like a branch cut off from a tree — it looks alive for a while, but it's actually dead, and soon everyone will see it.
But if you're in Christ:
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in transgressions, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you are saved!"
— Ephesians 2:4–5 (NET)
You were dead. Now you're alive. And not just temporarily — eternally.
Physical death can't touch your soul. You'll die once, but you'll never truly die.
How This Changes How You Follow Him
Stop fearing death. Live like you're already eternal.
"For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain."
— Philippians 1:21 (NET)
Paul wasn't being morbid. He was being realistic. Death isn't loss — it's gain. You leave a broken body and enter the presence of Christ. That's an upgrade.
How this applies:
When loved ones die: Grieve — Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb (John 11:35). But don't grieve "like the rest who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13 NET). They're with the Resurrection and the Life. You'll see them again.
When culture celebrates death (abortion, euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide): Stand for life. You serve the One who defeats death. Every life matters because every life is created by the Author of Life.
When you're tempted to cling to this life: Remember — this isn't all there is. This world is passing away. Live radically for the kingdom. You can't lose what matters most.
"Therefore we do not despair, but even if our physical body is wearing away, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary, light suffering is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison because we are not looking at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen. For what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal."
— 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 (NET)
Application this week:
Is fear of death (or suffering, or loss) keeping you from obeying God in some area?
Name it. Write it down. Then confess it: "Jesus, You are the Resurrection and the Life. I'm afraid of ________. Free me from that fear."
Then take one step of obedience in that area, trusting that even if it costs you everything, you can't lose what matters most.
