Part 1: Who Jesus Is
"I AM the Bread of Life" (John 6:35)
The Context
Jesus had just fed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. The crowd followed Him across the Sea of Galilee, wanting more free bread. He told them:
"Do not work for the food that disappears, but for the food that remains to eternal life — food which the Son of Man will give to you, for God the Father has put his seal of approval on him."
— John 6:27 (NET)
They asked, "What must we do to accomplish the deeds God requires?"
Jesus answered: "This is the deed God requires — to believe in the one whom He sent."
They demanded a sign: "What sign then will you perform, so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
Jesus responded: "I tell you the solemn truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
They said, "Sir, give us this bread all the time!"
Jesus said to them:
"I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty."
— John 6:35 (NET)
What This Reveals About Jesus
First: He is essential for life. You can't survive without bread. You can't truly live — eternally — without Jesus. He's not optional. He's not supplemental. He is the source of life itself.
Second: He satisfies completely. Physical bread fills you temporarily — hours later, you're hungry again. Jesus satisfies the deep hunger of the soul permanently. Those who come to Him are filled.
Third: He is greater than Moses and the manna. The Jews pointed to Moses and the manna as proof that God worked through Moses. Jesus said: Moses didn't give you manna — God did. And I'm giving you something better than manna. Manna sustained for a day. I give eternal life.
Fourth: He came from heaven. Bread comes from wheat, ground, baked. Jesus "came down from heaven" (John 6:33, 38, 41, 50, 51, 58). He's not a man who ascended to God — He's God who descended to man.
Fifth: He must be consumed, not just admired. Later in the chapter, Jesus says:
"I tell you the solemn truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves."
— John 6:53 (NET)
This scandalized many disciples — they left Him over this (John 6:66). But the point is clear: You don't just learn about Jesus. You consume Him. You take Him into yourself. Union with Christ is the source of life.
Sixth: This is a divine claim. Remember: "I AM" is the name of God. When Jesus says "I AM the bread of life," He's claiming:
- To be the source of eternal life (only God has this)
- To have come from heaven (only God descends from heaven)
- To be greater than Moses and the prophets (only God is greater)
- To satisfy the soul's deepest hunger (only God can do this)
What This Reveals About You
You are spiritually starving.
You might be physically full. Financially comfortable. Surrounded by entertainment, pleasure, relationships, achievements.
But your soul is emaciated.
You're trying to fill the hunger with:
- Career success (it never satisfies)
- Romantic love (it disappoints)
- Political victories (they don't last)
- Pleasure (it's fleeting)
- Even religious activity (without Christ, it's just motion)
None of it works. Only Jesus does.
Augustine prayed: "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you." (Confessions, Book I, public domain)
That hunger you feel — even when you have everything the world says should satisfy you — that's your soul crying out for the Bread of Life.
How This Changes How You Follow Him
Stop grazing on junk food. Feast on Christ.
In Scripture: Don't just read your Bible — meditate on it. Chew on it. Let it nourish you (Psalm 1:2). The Word of God (Scripture) points you to the Word of God (Jesus). When you read Scripture, you're encountering Christ.
In prayer: Don't just ask for things — commune with Him. Talk to Him like you'd talk to the only person who truly satisfies. He's not a cosmic vending machine. He's the Bread of Life. Relationship, not transaction.
In the Lord's Supper: When you take the bread, remember: "This is my body, which is for you" (1 Corinthians 11:24 NET). You're not just commemorating. You're proclaiming (1 Corinthians 11:26) and participating (1 Corinthians 10:16) in Christ. You're consuming the Bread of Life.
Application this week:
Fast from something — food, social media, TV — and every time you feel the craving, turn it into prayer: "Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Satisfy me."
Feel the physical hunger. Let it remind you of the spiritual hunger Jesus fills.
