Part 1: Who Jesus Is
"I AM the Door" (John 10:9)
The Context
Jesus was contrasting Himself with the Pharisees, who claimed to be the shepherds of Israel but were actually "thieves and robbers" (John 10:8) who didn't care for the sheep.
He used the metaphor of a sheepfold — a walled enclosure where sheep were kept at night for protection. The sheepfold had one entrance, and the shepherd would literally sleep in the doorway to protect the sheep from predators and thieves.
Jesus said:
"I tell you the solemn truth, I am the door for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will come in and go out, and find pasture."
— John 10:7–9 (NET)
What This Reveals About Jesus
First: He is the only entrance to salvation. Not "a door among many." Not "one valid path." THE door. Singular. Exclusive.
"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved."
— Acts 4:12 (NET)
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
— John 14:6 (NET)
Second: He is security. Ancient shepherds would sleep in the doorway. Predators — wolves, lions, bears, thieves — had to go through the shepherd to get to the sheep. Jesus stands between you and everything that would destroy you.
Third: He is access to provision. Through the door, you "come in and go out, and find pasture." Everything you need — forgiveness, righteousness, peace, joy, eternal life — comes through Him.
Fourth: He protects from false shepherds. "All who came before me were thieves and robbers" (John 10:8). The Pharisees claimed authority over the sheep but exploited them (Matthew 23:4). False teachers today do the same. Jesus is the only legitimate shepherd. Everyone else is a thief.
Fifth: This is a divine claim. In the Old Testament, God is the shepherd of Israel (Psalm 23; Ezekiel 34). Jesus claims to be the door to the sheepfold — the access point to God's protection and provision. Only God can make this claim.
What This Reveals About You
You are outside the sheepfold, and you desperately need in.
Apart from Christ:
- You're exposed to spiritual predators (demonic forces, false teaching, sin's power)
- You're starving (no access to true spiritual nourishment)
- You're lost (no shepherd to guide you)
But notice: The door is open.
Jesus isn't keeping you out. He's not guarding the entrance against you. He IS the entrance, and He's inviting you in.
"If anyone enters through me, he will be saved…" (John 10:9)
"Anyone." Not just Jews. Not just the religiously impressive. Not just the morally upright. Anyone who enters through Jesus is saved.
How This Changes How You Follow Him
Stop trying other doors.
This is where modern culture most violently rejects Jesus. Our world says:
- "All roads lead to God"
- "Every religion is just a different path up the same mountain"
- "Find your own truth"
- "It's arrogant to claim there's only one way"
Jesus says: "I AM the door."
Not "I'll show you several doors and you pick." THE door. Singular.
This sounds arrogant — until you remember who's speaking. If Jesus is just a man, it IS arrogant. But if Jesus is God (and He is), then it's simply truth.
The Creator of the universe gets to define the terms of access to Himself.
How this applies:
In evangelism: Don't be embarrassed by exclusivity. Jesus is THE way, not A way. That's not bigotry — that's the gospel.
In your own assurance: You're safe. You entered through the Door.
"I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them from my Father's hand."
— John 10:28–29 (NET)
You're secure. Not because you're holding onto Jesus — because He's holding onto you.
In raising your children: Teach them early: Jesus isn't one option among many. He's the only option. Other religions aren't "different but equally valid paths" — they're dead ends. Only Jesus is the door.
Application this week:
Who in your life is trying to enter by another door? (Good works, morality, religion, sincerity, "just being a good person"?)
Pray for them. Then ask God for an opportunity to gently point them to THE door.
