Part 2: What Jesus Commands
Summary: The Sacraments
Baptism and the Lord's Supper are:
- Commanded by Christ (not optional)
- Practiced by the early church (universally)
- Signs of the covenant (visible reminders of invisible grace)
- Means of grace (God works through them to strengthen your faith)
- Sources of unity (all Christians practice them)
- Sources of division (we disagree on the details)
Don't let disagreements over HOW to practice these sacraments divide you from other believers.
Catholics, Orthodox, Lutherans, Reformed, Baptists — we all baptize. We all take Communion. We're all obeying Christ.
The sacraments are gifts from Christ to His church. Receive them gratefully. Practice them faithfully. And get back to the real war — rescuing people from the kingdom of darkness.
Conclusion of Part 2
You've now read Jesus' commands organized into nine categories:
A. Love Commands — How to love people (including enemies) B. Prayer & Faith — How to commune with God and trust Him C. Money & Possessions — How to handle wealth D. Government & Authority — How to relate to Caesar E. Radical Discipleship — The cost of following Jesus F. Holiness & Purity — War against sin G. Mission — Making disciples H. Community & Church Life — Living together as the body I. Sacraments — Baptism and the Lord's Supper
That's a lot.
If you're overwhelmed, good. You should be.
These are the commands of God incarnate. When Jesus speaks, YHWH speaks. When Jesus commands, the Creator commands.
But here's what you need to remember before you move to Part 3:
Obedience Is Love, Not Legalism
"The one who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me."
— John 14:21 (NET)
You don't obey to earn God's favor. You already have His favor if you're in Christ (Romans 5:1).
You obey because you love Him.
And remember WHO is commanding you:
- He died for you (Romans 5:8)
- He rose for you (1 Corinthians 15:20)
- He intercedes for you (Hebrews 7:25)
- He will never leave you (Hebrews 13:5)
These aren't arbitrary rules from a distant deity. They're life-giving commands from the God who loves you, who became flesh, who died and rose to save you.
And He doesn't just command — He empowers.
The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead dwells in you (Romans 8:11). He will empower you to obey (Philippians 2:13).
So don't despair when you read these commands and think, "I can't do this."
You're right. You can't — in your own strength.
But the Spirit can. And He's in you. Empowering you. Transforming you. Conforming you to the image of Christ.
Start somewhere. Pick one category. Master it. Then add another.
Build slowly. Build faithfully. Build for a lifetime.
Jesus isn't asking for perfection today. He's asking for faithfulness over a lifetime.
And He promises:
"…that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 1:6 (NET)
Now, Part 3 will show you how Jesus teaches through parables — revealing the mysteries of the kingdom.
