Part 2: What Jesus Commands

Category B: Prayer & Faith

Prayer is how you commune with God. Faith is how you trust Him. Jesus commands both.

1. Pray Without Ceasing

Then Jesus told them a parable to show them they should always pray and not lose heart.

— Luke 18:1 (NET)

Paul echoed Jesus' teaching: "constantly pray" (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NET).

What this means: Not that you're on your knees 24/7. But that you live in constant communion with God.

Prayer becomes:

  • Breath prayers throughout the day ("Lord, help me." "Thank You, Father.")
  • Turning your attention toward God in every moment
  • Practicing the presence of God

Application: Set specific times for focused prayer (morning, evening). But also practice turning your mind toward God throughout the day — in the car, at your desk, doing dishes, waiting in line.

2. Pray in Secret

"But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you."

— Matthew 6:6 (NET)

Don't perform for people. Prayer is between you and God.

Application: Have a private place where you pray. Not to be seen. Not to be admired. Just you and God.

3. Ask, Seek, Knock

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."

— Matthew 7:7–8 (NET)

This is not a blank check. It's a promise that God hears and responds to persistent, faith-filled prayer.

The key is persistence.

Luke 11:5–8 (The Friend at Midnight): A man goes to his neighbor at midnight asking for bread. The neighbor refuses. But because of the man's bold persistence, the neighbor eventually gives him what he needs.

Jesus' point: Be bold in prayer. Be persistent. Don't give up.

Application: What have you stopped praying for? Start again. Persist.

4. Have Faith in God

"Have faith in God!"

— Mark 11:22 (NET)

Simple. Direct. Trust God.

"…all things are possible for the one who believes."

— Mark 9:23 (NET)

Not "all things are possible if you try hard enough." All things are possible for one who believes.

Application: What are you trying to accomplish in your own strength? Stop. Trust God. Ask Him to do what you can't.

5. Mountain-Moving Faith

"I tell you the truth, if someone says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. For this reason I tell you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

— Mark 11:23–24 (NET)

This is astounding.

Jesus commands you to believe that you have received what you're praying for before you see it manifest.

This is not positive thinking. This is faith.

Faith is "being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1 NET).

You don't wait to see it before you believe. You believe, and then you see.

Application: When you pray for something biblical (healing, provision, deliverance, the salvation of a loved one), thank God that it's already done — even if you don't see it yet. Stand on His Word. Believe. Persist.

6. Watch and Pray

"Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

— Matthew 26:41 (NET)

"Watch out! Stay alert! For you do not know when the time will come."

— Mark 13:33 (NET)

You must stay vigilant. Temptation is coming. Trials are coming. The Adversary is prowling. Jesus is returning — you don't know when.

Watch = Stay alert. Be aware. Don't be lulled to sleep by comfort. Pray = Depend on God's strength, not your own.

Application: Don't assume you're safe from temptation. Stay watchful. Pray daily for protection from sin and deception.

7. Pray for Your Persecutors

"…and pray for those who persecute you."

— Matthew 5:44 (NET)

Not just "love your enemies" (though that too). Pray for them.

What to pray?

  • Their salvation (they're captives, not enemies)
  • Their eyes to be opened (2 Corinthians 4:4)
  • God's blessing on them (even though they're persecuting you)

Application: Who is persecuting you? A boss? A neighbor? A family member? Pray for them. By name. Regularly.
