Part 7: The Authority of the Disciple

Chapter 6: Practical Action Steps for Exercising Authority

You've read the theology. You understand the legal basis. You've been warned about the dangers. Now what?

Step 1: Get Your Own House in Order

Before you pray for anyone else's healing or deliverance, examine yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5). Are you walking in obedience (1 John 3:22)? Are you abiding in Christ (John 15:4)? Are you filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)? Are you in unrepentant sin (confess it — 1 John 1:9)? You cannot give what you don't have. If you're not walking in victory, you can't lead others to victory.

Step 2: Start Small

Don't start by trying to cast demons out of a violent, demon-possessed person. Start by praying for a friend's headache. Start by anointing a sick church member with oil. Start by praying over your own child when they're ill. Build experience. Build faith. Build confidence.

Step 3: Pray with Scripture

Don't just pray random thoughts. Stand on the Word. Speak Scripture aloud when you pray for healing or deliverance.

Examples:

  • "By His wounds you are healed" (1 Peter 2:24)
  • "He bore our diseases" (Matthew 8:17)
  • "The Son of Man came to destroy the works of the devil" (1 John 3:8)
  • "Whom the Son sets free is free indeed" (John 8:36)

The Word is your weapon (Ephesians 6:17). Use it.

Step 4: Involve Mature Believers

Don't go rogue. Healing and deliverance are community activities. Involve your pastor, elders, or mature Christians. James 5:14 says to call the elders for prayer. Matthew 18:20 says where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there. Don't isolate yourself.

Step 5: Follow Up

Healing and deliverance are not one-time events. Follow up. Check on the person. Encourage them. Disciple them. Help them stay free. If you cast out a demon but don't help the person fill the void with the Holy Spirit, the demon will return (Matthew 12:43–45).

Step 6: Give God the Glory

When healing happens, when deliverance occurs, point people to Jesus, not to yourself. "Jesus healed you. Give Him thanks." "God set you free. Worship Him." The moment you take credit, you've lost the authority. It was never yours to begin with.
