Part 12: Daily Rhythms & Practices

Building a Rule of Life

All these disciplines together can feel overwhelming. Don't try to do them all at once. Instead, build a "Rule of Life" — a simple, sustainable rhythm.

Example Rule of Life:

Daily: morning prayer (15 min), Scripture reading (10 min), one breath prayer habit throughout the day, evening examen (5 min).

Weekly: corporate worship (Sunday), Sabbath (Sunday, no work), one act of service, one meal with a friend (fellowship).

Monthly: half-day retreat (three to four hours alone with God), give generously (tithe plus offerings), confession with accountability partner.

Annually: extended retreat (two to three days), review and adjust your Rule of Life.

Start small: pick three things from this chapter to start this week — morning prayer (10 min), one Sabbath day, and confess one sin to a trusted friend. Do those for a month. Then add more.

Final Encouragement: Grace, Not Law

These disciplines are means of grace, not laws to earn God's favor.

If you miss a day: confess it, receive grace, start again. If you fail: get back up — the goal is progress, not perfection. If it feels like drudgery: stop, rest, and ask God to renew your delight in Him. Disciplines are tools, not masters. Use them to draw near to God, not to impress Him.

O God, you are my God! I long for you! My soul thirsts for you.

— Psalm 63:1 (NET)

That's the heart posture. Thirsty. Seeking. Delighting. The disciplines are how you drink.

Now go and walk with God — daily, deeply, joyfully.
