The Adversary's Narrative

V. The Timing and the Location — Why Arabia, Why the 7th Century

The question of timing is worth addressing, because it reveals something about the precision of the operation.

The 7th century Arabian peninsula was uniquely positioned for what I needed. The Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire — the major Christian power of the age — had been weakened by two centuries of doctrinal controversy and political fragmentation. The Monophysite and Nestorian controversies had left significant Christian populations alienated from Constantinople and from each other, holding distorted versions of Christology that were already approximating some of what my new system would teach. The population of the Arabian peninsula had extensive contact with Christianity and Judaism but limited access to the primary texts in their original languages — which meant they knew the stories without the theological precision.

The social conditions were also favorable: a tribal society where honor, kinship, and communal identity were the primary organizing principles; where a message of unity, dignity, and divine favor for the previously marginalized Arab peoples would find extraordinary resonance; and where the moral reform the new message brought — the end of female infanticide, the regulation of warfare, the obligation of generosity — was genuinely needed and would be visibly beneficial.

I want to be clear about this. The moral reform was real. The social improvement was genuine. The sincerity of the founding prophet was, as far as I can observe, complete. This is essential to understanding why the operation has been so successful: it has never been cynical. The most dangerous deceptions are the ones that produce genuine good as a side effect. A system that produced obvious evil would be questioned, examined, and eventually rejected. A system that produces real moral improvement, genuine community, disciplined prayer, authentic generosity, and sincere love of God — while removing the mechanism of salvation — is one that no one has any incentive to examine critically. Why would you scrutinize something that is making you better?

The answer is: because better is not the same as saved. And because a cage made of gold is still a cage, however beautiful the metalwork.
