Vol III: From Silence to Certainty
Appendix C: The Fruit of the Spirit Comparison
Galatians 5:22–23 lists nine qualities produced in the believer by the Holy Spirit. The structural difference: in Christianity, the Holy Spirit produces these qualities from within. In Islam, they are commanded by law. Both produce some fruit — law shapes behavior. But the depth, consistency, and durability differ between a person following rules from the outside and a person with a changed nature from the inside.
Love (Agape)
Christianity: The source is the character of God Himself, who IS love (1 John 4:8). God loved us before we loved Him. The believer's love flows from an already-received love — an overflow, not an achievement. Islam: God is Al-Wadud — the Loving One. But the unconditional, pre-emptive, sacrificial love that drives Christian agape is not available from the Islamic framework in the same structural way.
Joy (Chara)
Christianity: The settled delight in the knowledge that the relationship with God is secure, that the outcome is determined, that death has been defeated. This joy coexists with grief and pain — Paul writes his most joyful letter (Philippians) from prison. Islam: Structural uncertainty about salvation cannot produce the deep settled joy that comes from knowing the verdict in advance.
Peace (Eirene)
Christianity: The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7) comes from not being under condemnation — from knowing the war between your soul and God's holiness has ended through the cross. Islam: Peace (salam) is central — beautiful and genuine — but peace with God in the Christian structural sense requires the cross.
Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control
Both Islam and Christianity value and command all five. The structural difference is the source: in Christianity, the Holy Spirit produces these qualities from within as natural expressions of a transformed nature. In Islam, they are commanded by law and reinforced by reward and fear of punishment. Both produce some fruit. But the depth and durability differ between a person following rules from the outside and a person with a changed nature from the inside.
