Vol III: From Silence to Certainty

A Final Reflection: Three Volumes, One Story

Volume I gave you the battle. Volume II gave you the King. Volume III gives you the conversation.

But the three are one story. The battle is not with flesh and blood — it is with the spiritual forces that have arranged the architecture of a billion and a half souls' separation from the cross. The King is the one who descended into that architecture and shattered it from the inside. And the conversation is the specific, irreplaceable act of one human being turning to another — not with power, not with strategy, not with superior intellectual preparation, though all of those things matter — and saying: something has happened. I know who did it. And His name is in your book.

The Apostles' Creed says it in eight words: He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.

Eight words that carry the weight of the Gospel of Nicodemus, the shattering of the gates, the binding of Satan in iron chains, Hades turning on his former master, the walking dead of Matthew 27:52–53, the freed captives streaming upward, and the risen Jesus standing in the morning light of the third day with the keys of death and Hades in His hand.

The disciple who understands what those eight words mean — who has followed the rock, and found the passageway, and explored every room — is ready for the conversation. Not because they have all the answers. But because they know the Person to whom every honest question eventually leads.

"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: 'Look! The residence of God is among human beings. He will live among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more — or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.'" — Revelation 21:3–4 (NET)

Go.

"Like a fool, you did not know what you were doing." — Hades, to Satan. Gospel of Nicodemus.

"Now this is eternal life — that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent." — John 17:3 (NET)
