Part Two: The Person of Jesus
Section 9 — The Return of Jesus: Agreed by Both Traditions
Both Islam and Christianity teach that Jesus will return at the end of time. The Islamic tradition is extensive. But this raises a question: Why will Jesus return — and not Muhammad, or Moses, or any other prophet? No other prophet in Islamic tradition is given the role of returning at the end of history. Of all the prophets, God sends Jesus.
✖ Muslim Response: Jesus returns because God honored him. His return fulfills prophecy. It does not imply divinity.
✔ How to respond: Of all prophets — including Muhammad, the greatest prophet in Islam — God sends Jesus to close human history. What makes Jesus the right person for that assignment? In Christian theology the answer is clear: He is the judge of the living and the dead because He died and rose for them. He uniquely accomplished what uniquely qualifies Him to complete. What is the Islamic explanation for why Jesus specifically returns and not Muhammad?
★ Disciple Tip: This question — why Jesus returns and not Muhammad — is one many Muslims have never been asked. It has no satisfying answer within Islamic categories. Let the question sit.
Section 10 — 'No More Than a Messenger': The Tension the Quran Cannot Resolve
The Quran gives Jesus titles and roles it never gives Muhammad — Word of God, Spirit from God, born of a virgin, sinless, raises the dead, will return at the end of time. And then: no more than a messenger (Surah 4:171; 5:75). The Christian tradition resolves this tension. The Quran arrived at the edge of the truth about Jesus and retreated. No more than a messenger is the one claim that does not fit all the other claims.
✖ Muslim Response: God can give anyone any title He chooses. These are honors, not evidence of divinity.
✔ How to respond: In John's Gospel, Jesus claims repeatedly to share the identity of God: The Father and I are one (10:30), Before Abraham came into existence, I am! (8:58), accepting worship from Thomas who calls Him My Lord and my God (20:28). The titles in the Quran are too heavy for a merely human messenger to carry.
