Part Five: The Nature of God

Section 23 — Can a Holy God Forgive Without Atonement?

In Islamic theology, even Muhammad expressed uncertainty about his own salvation: By Allah, though I am the Apostle of Allah, yet I do not know what Allah will do to me (Sahih Bukhari 6:60:60). If the greatest of all prophets could not be certain, how can any ordinary Muslim know? The Christian system produces certainty — not because of personal achievement but because of what Christ has already accomplished.

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." — Romans 8:1 (NET)

✖ Muslim Response: Certainty of salvation is arrogance. Uncertainty keeps us humble and motivates good deeds.

✔ How to respond: Arrogance would be: I deserve heaven because I am good. Assurance is: I receive heaven as a gift because Christ is righteous and I am in Him. The first is self-congratulation. The second is gratitude. Assurance of salvation produces love, not complacency. You serve God not to earn His love but because you already have it.

Section 24 — The Holy Spirit as Indwelling Person

"Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth... he resides with you and will be in you." — John 14:16–17 (NET)

In Islamic theology, the Spirit is a divine agent. It does not dwell inside ordinary believers. The believer submits to God from the outside. In Christian theology, the same Spirit who was present at creation, who overshadowed Mary, who descended on Jesus at His baptism — that Spirit now takes up permanent residence inside every person who trusts in Jesus Christ.

✖ Muslim Response: In Islam, God is close to us — closer than our jugular vein (Surah 50:16). We do not need a Spirit to dwell inside us.

✔ How to respond: God's awareness and proximity is a truth both traditions affirm. But there is a difference between God knowing you from outside and God dwelling in you from inside. A doctor who monitors vital signs remotely knows your condition. A surgeon who enters the body to repair what is broken does something fundamentally different. The Holy Spirit's indwelling is God's transformative presence within the believer, remaking from the inside what law and effort cannot reach.
