Part One: Starting the Conversation
Section 3 — Starting Where They Are: The Quran's Own Christology
The Christian Statement
The Quran contains a portrait of Jesus that, if followed to its logical conclusion, raises questions the Quran itself cannot answer. What the Quran says about Jesus:
- Born of a virgin (Surah 3:47; 19:20–21)
- Called the Messiah (Al-Masih) twelve times
- Called Kalimatullah — Word of God (Surah 4:171; 3:45)
- Called Ruh min Allah — Spirit from God (Surah 4:171)
- Healed the blind, healed lepers, raised the dead (Surah 3:49; 5:110)
- Sinless — the only prophet the Quran does not record as sinning
- Ascended to heaven (Surah 4:158)
- Will return at the end of time (Surah 43:61)
The question the Quran raises but cannot answer: If Jesus is the Word of God — not a word from God, but the Word of God — is the Word of God created or uncreated? If created, there was a moment when God was without His Word. If uncreated, the Word of God is not a creature. This is the internal logic of the Quran's own title, followed to its conclusion.
✖ Muslim Response: Kalimatullah simply means Jesus was created by God's word — by God saying Be! Just as Adam was created.
✔ How to respond: Adam was never called the Word of God. The title Kalimatullah is unique to Jesus. If it meant only created by God's command it would apply to everything that exists. The unique application to Jesus demands a unique explanation.
