Breaking Satan's Lies
APPENDIX D: The God-Awareness Check
John 17:3 — "Now this is eternal life—that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent." (NET). Not future destination. Present-tense knowing. Relational. Ongoing. The measure of whether you are abiding is not how much you know about God, and it is not how conscious you are of yourself. It is how conscious you are of Him.
Self-awareness can feel like spiritual progress. You notice your sin. You see your patterns. You become more reflective. But reflection is not the same as abiding. The Adversary uses self-awareness as a weapon because it keeps you in the mirror looking at yourself rather than looking at Christ. The measure of true abiding is simple: Are you increasingly aware of God?
The Check (use daily, or when you feel disconnected):
- Right now, where is your awareness? Are you thinking about yourself—your weakness, your shame, your performance, your need to change? Or are you aware of God—His presence, His character, His promises, His love toward you?
- If you are in self-awareness, ask: What pulled me away from God-awareness into self-consciousness? Identify the thought or the pressure. Then yield that moment to the Spirit and ask: What does relational presence with God feel like right now?
- Set a baseline. What is your normal God-awareness level right now? Not what you wish it was. What is it actually? Notice this. Write it down if helpful.
- Over the next week, practice yielding carnal appeals and self-consciousness back to the Spirit. Notice what shifts. Is your baseline God-awareness growing? Are you spending less time in self-consciousness? Are you more at peace?
This is the only measure that matters. Not your theology improving. Not your behavior changing. Your awareness of Him. If that is deepening, everything else will follow. If that is shallow, nothing else matters.
