Breaking Satan's Lies
APPENDIX A: Recognizing Carnal Appeal vs. Spirit's Leading
The thought arrives. Your body tightens. Your mind accelerates. Something pulls at you—an idea, a plan, a response, an anxiety. In that moment, you have to know: is this the Adversary working through your flesh, or is this the Spirit's direction?
They feel different because they are different. The carnal appeal feels like urgency. The Spirit's leading feels like presence.
The Carnal Appeal:
It arrives as pressure. Do this now. Protect yourself. Say this. Avoid that. Get ahead of this. It sounds reasonable, sometimes even scriptural, but underneath it is fear or self-protection or image-management. It is the Adversary working through your flesh—your legitimate human desires twisted into demands that pull you away from abiding. You recognize it because it creates momentum away from God-awareness and toward self-consciousness. You feel more aware of the threat, more responsible for the outcome, more dependent on your own response. It accelerates your thinking and hardens your chest.
The Spirit's Leading:
It arrives as presence. Not as a voice that argues with you, but as a drawing toward relational connection with God. It is the sound of peace when peace has no logical business existing. It creates space in your chest. It makes you more aware of Him and less aware of yourself. It doesn't eliminate the threat or solve the problem immediately, but it relocates your awareness from the crisis to His character. You recognize it because it calls you toward abiding, toward the vine, toward John 15.
The One Test That Matters:
Does this pull me toward relational presence with God, or away from it? Toward God-awareness, or toward self-consciousness? That is the test. It works every time because it is the fundamental difference. The carnal appeal promises you will be safe if you control the outcome. The Spirit's voice offers you peace while He bears the outcome. One makes you the protagonist. One makes you the branch.
When you recognize the carnal appeal, you don't shame yourself. You don't fight it directly. You simply acknowledge it: here is the flesh being appealed to. Then you yield that moment to the Spirit's will and ask Him what relational presence with Him looks like right now, in this moment. That yielding is the effective power at work.
