Section 11

No Brake on the Reassignment (2 of 2)

America's absence. The United States appears nowhere in Daniel, Ezekiel, or Revelation, a fact dispensationalist writers have puzzled over in print.86 Whatever explanation is offered for the absence takes a plain absence and makes it carry theological weight. It is the same move Gog-Magog and the prince of Persia make with a presence instead of an absence. A reading habit this flexible does not need the text to say something in order to find a message in it. It can find one either way.

Many antichrists, one method. 1 John names the pattern in the plural: "Children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared" (1 John 2:18).87 The verse is usually read as background to "who is the Antichrist today?" It is better read as the record of how often that question has been asked and answered wrongly, at full confidence, by people who felt they were simply reading current events against the text. Nero and Domitian carried the label in the first century, tied to the legend that Nero would return from death and to Domitian's persecution of the church.88 The papacy, the office and not any one pope, carried it through Reformation-era historicism and into some confessional documents.89 Napoleon drew it during the Napoleonic wars.90 Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin drew it through the middle of the twentieth century, Stalin's identification riding the same Gog-Magog reading traced above.91 Henry Kissinger drew numerological arguments in the 1970s, and Mikhail Gorbachev drew sustained attention in the 1980s because of his birthmark.92 Barack Obama drew extensive identification during his presidency.93 Today the same method runs on Donald Trump from both directions: some commentators ask whether he is, or heralds, the Antichrist, and a prophecy movement casts him as a modern King Cyrus raised up by God.94

Every identification on the list felt, to the people making it, like discernment rather than speculation. Every one was abandoned, almost always without a formal retraction of the method that produced it. A new figure and a new news cycle made the old identification stop being interesting. That is not what a correct reading looks like when it is being refined. It is what a renewable content format looks like, finding new material indefinitely without auditing why the last piece turned out wrong.

So the question can be asked directly: name one identification from the last century that the system withdrew because the text required it, not because the headline changed. None of the cases above is one, the historicist cases on the list included. The point is not that other systems have a cleaner record. It is that this system's chart presents each new match as the plain sense of the text.

What this section does and doesn't claim. It does not claim Ryrie or Saucy taught "Rosh equals Russia" as doctrine, and it does not touch the Israel/Church distinction, the future tribulation, or the millennium directly. It claims that the gap between serious systematic dispensationalism and the version reaching most believers on their phones is not an accident this system happens to share with every tradition equally. The system's structure makes it easy to produce. The rule for when popular practice counts against a system is the same here and in Section 12: it counts when the practice follows from the system's own commitments, here an open slot for the current enemy, a signless imminency, and literalism applied to headlines, and it does not count when the practice follows from a different doctrine.
