Part Five
What Aevum Means, and Why the Resurrection Body Needs the Word
There is a category medieval theology developed to describe the beings this part of the book has already introduced — the council members, faithful and fallen alike — and it turns out to be exactly the category that describes what your own resurrection body, the one Part Four already showed you is still future, is going to be like.
God exists in eternity: no succession at all, no before and after, everything in His being simultaneous and whole. Human beings, as we currently exist, live in time: succession and entropy together, moving through duration that inescapably runs down, ages, decays, forgets. Between these two modes of existence, Thomas Aquinas, drawing on the earlier philosophical work of Boethius, identified a third: aevum — succession without entropy. Beings who exist in this mode experience real sequence, real before-and-after, the way an angel in Scripture can be genuinely delayed twenty-one days, as Gabriel is in Daniel 10, without that delay diminishing or aging the being who experiences it. Duration, in other words, that does not run down.
This matters enormously for understanding what the resurrection body Part Four already showed you Paul describes — sown one way, raised another, no longer subject to decay — actually is. It is not a return to Eden's pre-fall body, and it is not an escape from physicality into pure disembodied spirit, the way full preterism's reading of "spiritual body" would require. It is aevum, made flesh: temporal existence, genuinely embodied, genuinely moving through real sequence and real experience, but without the entropy that currently governs every human body from the moment of birth. This is precisely what the risen Christ demonstrated to His frightened disciples in the Upper Room, in the scene Part Four already walked you through — a body that could be touched, that could eat, that occupied space and time the way any body does, and that could also walk through locked doors and vanish at will, because it had been transformed into exactly this mode of existence: aevum made flesh, the proof of concept for what every believer's own resurrection, still future, is going to be.
