The guide
Add a small church
This guide describes 26 churches. A small church that is not among them can ask to be added. The application is the personal creed the results page prints, plus a few details so the author can check that the submission comes from a real church. There is no separate form to learn: you answer the questionnaire for your church, save the creed, and send the creed with the details below.
- Who fills it in. The pastor, the governing body, or a person the governing body has named. Answer only what your church’s own documents say, and leave a question blank where they say nothing.
- Answer the questionnaire for your church. Take the questionnaire for your church and, under each question, set the level that asks how much it matters (for a church it records how firmly the church holds the point). For a church the four levels mean its binding level: Required (required of members or clergy), Expected (expected of clergy and leaders), Taught (taught, not enforced; this is the default) or Left to conscience. A question you do not mark prints as Taught, so check every question before you save.
- Save the creed. On the results page press “Save my creed as PDF.” (the creed has no name box now; give the church’s name in your message below). The PDF prints each question, the answer, the level, and at the bottom a save code that loads the same answers and levels exactly. Post the PDF on your church’s own website.
- Send these details with it. The creed does not carry them. To be published: the church’s name, street address, denomination or network (or “independent”), a link to its website, a link to the page that gives its location and service times, and, if you wish, a public phone number or email. For verification only: a link, on your own website, to your governing document (constitution, bylaws, articles or statement of faith) or to the page of the body that governs the church; the name and role of the person sending the application; a private phone number or email for that person; and the link to the posted creed. Use the contact line in the Terms of use.
- What happens next. The author checks that every link is on the church’s own domain, that the governance document shows the church and the people who speak for it, and that the sender is one of them or was named by them. The answers are then recorded as the church’s own and marked “self-submitted.” The levels are recorded as the church states them. Nothing is added before it is checked, and the first step is one pilot church.
A member answering for himself or herself, rather than for a church, should simply save a personal creed.
