Part Three: The Instruments

Chapter Eleven — Bench Three: Is This Voice from God?

Drawn from Breaking Satan's Lies, Vol VII: The Sons of God, The Companion, Ecclesiastes Today

The question arrives in several forms. It might be a thought that will not leave. It might be a prompting to say something or go somewhere, or a gift someone claims to be using, or a teaching, a vision, or a book that "felt" like God. The corpus does not try to settle the question by looking at the experience. It looks at direction and at fruit, and it gives the disciple three instruments of increasing scale.

The canon volume applies the same three questions on a larger scale. For any claim to speak by the Spirit it asks whether the claim testifies to Christ and not past Him, whether it contradicts what Scripture has already given, and whether it bears the fruit of Galatians 5:22–23. It says the three apply equally to those who believe the gifts have ceased and those who believe they continue.

Read together, the instruments of this bench give the same three questions at different scales. Does it agree with what has been given? Does it point to the Person? What does it grow, over time? None of them depends on how the experience felt. All of them depend on a prior condition that the Companion volume names as plainly as it names the tests: a quiet mind and a surrendered will. A disciple running these on a voice while holding his own agenda behind his back has already failed the test he is running. The same four tests are applied to machine-generated theology in Part Four.
