What You Carry

Part Four: The Machine

A reader who gets this far will have noticed that this book was written with a machine, and that the instruments in Part Three that grade teaching are run on one. The question is fair and the corpus does not dodge it. This part takes it in three steps. Chapter Fifteen reports what the corpus says the machine is and is not. Chapter Sixteen lays out the corpus's own instruments for working with it, on the same cards as Part Three, with one added line on each card saying what that instrument cannot tell you. Chapter Seventeen gives five cautions, and the last of them is about this book.

The order is the order of the whole book. The machine comes after the Person, never before. The essay that introduces the subject ends with a line that sets the proportion: "Use the tools. Stay in the vine. The two are not in competition."
