A Note on the Bench as a Whole

None of these instruments is a method that works without the person. Each one asks something of the one using it before it asks anything of the thing under test. Part Four takes up a question these benches leave open, which is what happens when the tool in your hands is a machine, and what the corpus's own instruments say about that machine and about the book you are holding.
