What Scripture says, what ancient texts add, what modern frameworks observe — and where the lines are

This appendix draws the boundary lines for every major topic in the volume. Red overreach warnings indicate where the volume could claim more than the evidence supports. Green cleared notes indicate what is well-established and safe to assert with confidence.

Topic 1 — Sons of God and the Divine Council

TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE SAYS

Bene Elohim exist and were present at earth's founding (Job 38:7). Assigned governance over nations (Deut 32:8 DSS). Appear in God's council (Job 1:6, Ps 82). God rebukes them for corrupt governance (Ps 82). They will be judged. Jesus confirms divine council texts (John 10:34-36).

TIER 2 — ENOCH/DSS ADDS

1 Enoch names them (200 Watchers, Semyaza), details the rebellion. The DSS preserves this as normative Second Temple theology. Jude quotes 1 Enoch as prophecy. These details illuminate what the NT authors understood — they are not independently binding doctrine.

TIER 3 — MODERN FRAME OBSERVES

Ancient alien theory correctly identifies non-human intelligences of advanced capability interacting with ancient humanity. It misidentifies their origin (space vs. a different ontological category entirely) and misses their accountability to the Creator who made them.

⚠ OVERREACH:

Do not use 1 Enoch's specific details (Semyaza, 200 Watchers, Mount Hermon) as though they are Scripture. Write: "The tradition preserved in 1 Enoch records..." Never: "Scripture tells us there were 200 Watchers."

CLEARED:

The divine council framework is mainstream Old Testament scholarship. Michael Heiser's The Unseen Realm (Lexham Press, 2015) is the accessible academic source — evangelical scholar, PhD in Hebrew Bible.

Topic 2 — Genesis 6, the Nephilim, Boundary Violation

TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE SAYS

Bene Elohim took human wives and produced Nephilim (Gen 6:1-4). Jude 6 confirms angels abandoned their proper domain. 2 Pet 2:4 confirms they are bound awaiting judgment. Jesus names Noah's time as the end-times template (Matt 24:37-39).

TIER 2 — ENOCH/JUDE ADDS

Jude quotes 1 Enoch 1:9 as prophecy. 1 Enoch describes forbidden knowledge transfer. The mechanism is elaborated in the tradition but not established doctrinally by Scripture alone. Tier 2 illuminates; it does not determine.

TIER 3 — MODERN FRAME OBSERVES

The structural parallel to modern genetic engineering is real: the mixing of categories God separated, the question of what constitutes "human," and who decides. This is structural echo, not prophetic identification. Use it as a question, not an answer.

⚠ OVERREACH:

Do not map CRISPR directly onto Genesis 6 as prediction. Write: "The question Genesis 6 raises — what are the limits of the category human, and who decides — is the same question our biotechnology is now forcing us to answer for the first time since the flood."
