Appendix B
Topic 3 — Fine-Tuning and Cosmology
WHAT SCRIPTURE ESTABLISHES
The physical universe has a beginning (Gen 1:1, John 1:1-3). It was created intentionally by a personal being outside it. The Creator is not part of the creation. The universe's existence is not self-explanatory. Science is man reading the blueprints of what God built.
WHAT SCIENCE OBSERVES
The universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old. The physical constants produce a life-permitting universe. The emergence of consciousness from matter remains causally unexplained. The universe requires an explanation outside itself — the options are design, multiverse, or better theory.
THE HONEST POSITION
Fine-tuning observations are real but the philosophical conclusions drawn from them are genuinely contested. The multiverse is a legitimate scientific response, not an ad hoc escape. This volume presents the universe's need for external explanation as the common ground on which the conversation begins — not as proof of a Designer.
⚠ OVERREACH:
Do not present fine-tuning as near-irrefutable proof of design. The probabilistic framing requires a measure space for possible universes that we do not have. The multiverse, motivated by independent physics, is a serious alternative. Acknowledge the contest — it makes the theistic observation more credible, not less.
CLEARED:
The reframed argument — "the universe cannot explain itself; the Designer hypothesis is the most coherent account within the tradition this volume operates from; fine-tuning observations are consistent with that account" — is both honest and defensible.
