Every load-bearing passage — what it establishes, what it leaves open

This appendix is the anchor document. Every doctrinal claim in Volume VII traces to a passage here. Three tier labels apply: Tier 1 = Scripture (load-bearing, non-negotiable). Tier 2 = ancient illuminating texts (context, not doctrine). Tier 3 = modern conversation partners (questions, not answers).

Section 1 — Before Creation: The Eternal Word

John 1:1-3 TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."

HEBREW/GREEK:

Logos (λόγος) — the rational principle underlying all reality. En archē — same phrase as Genesis 1:1 LXX. John deliberately echoes Genesis to establish the Logos as preceding and causing the beginning.

ESTABLISHES:

The Word (Christ) is eternal, predating all created things. "All things" (panta) has no exception clause. The physical universe has a beginning; God does not.

LEAVES OPEN:

The mechanism of creation. The existence of other rational beings prior to humanity.

Job 38:4-7 TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE

"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?... when the morning stars sang in chorus, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"

HEBREW/GREEK:

Bene Elohim (sons of God) — same phrase as Genesis 6:2 and 6:4. These beings were present and conscious when the earth's foundation was laid. They predate the earth.

ESTABLISHES:

Personal spiritual beings existed and were conscious before the earth's formation. They are older than the earth. This is explicit, not inferential.

LEAVES OPEN:

How much older. Their full nature and capabilities.

Section 2 — The Image Bearer

Genesis 1:26-27 TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE

"Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule...""

HEBREW/GREEK:

Tselem (image) — royal statue representing sovereign claim. Radah — viceregal governance language. In the ancient Near Eastern context, placing one's tselem in a territory asserted governance over it.

ESTABLISHES:

Humanity is uniquely appointed as God's image-bearing regent over the created order. No other being in Scripture receives this designation.

LEAVES OPEN:

Whether this designation was extended to beings elsewhere in the universe. The nature of the "us."

Genesis 2:7 TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE

"Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

HEBREW/GREEK:

Yatsar — potter shaping clay; hands-on formation. Nishmat chayyim – breath of life. Chayyim is a grammatical plurale tantum in Hebrew (always plural like mayim/water ), carrying no theological weight in it’s plural form. The uniqueness of this act lies in it’s mode – hands-on formation and direct personal breathing – not it’s vocabulary

ESTABLISHES:

The human person is constitutionally dual — physical matter from the created order, animating breath from the Creator. This act is not duplicated elsewhere in the creation narrative.

⚠ OVERREACH:

Claiming this definitively excludes all other possible life in the universe overclaims the text. It establishes what happened to Adam. Silence about other possibilities is not denial of them.

Romans 8:29 TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE

"For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters."

ESTABLISHES:

The goal of redemption is family resemblance — conformity to the image of the Son. The redeemed are joint heirs with Christ. His inheritance is all things (Heb 1:2, Col 1:16-17).
