Part Five: As It Was in the Days of Noah

The Tradition That Illuminates the Text

Jude does something unusual: he quotes 1 Enoch directly.

Jude 14-15

"Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone.""

[TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE] Jude's quotation of 1 Enoch is Scripture. Jude treats the tradition as genuine prophecy.

[TIER 2 — ILLUMINATING TEXT] 1 Enoch itself is not canonical Scripture. It is the Second Temple Jewish tradition that shaped the New Testament's own vocabulary for the Genesis 6 events. The Watcher narrative in 1 Enoch — 200 beings descending, teaching forbidden knowledge, producing the Nephilim — is Tier Two material: it illuminates what the biblical authors understood the passage to mean, but its specific details are not doctrinally binding.

HONEST NOTE: Rabbinic tradition shifted to the sons of Seth reading precisely because the angelic interpretation raised difficult questions about angel nature and theodicy. This shift is theologically motivated, not exegetically required. The New Testament authors — Jude, Peter, and by implication Jesus in Matthew 24 — preserve the angelic interpretation. This volume follows the New Testament's own reading, clearly labeled as Tier One. The Enochic elaboration — the names, the numbers, the forbidden knowledge — is labeled Tier Two throughout.

The Structural Echo in Our Time

We are the first generation in human history with the technological capability to do what Genesis 6 describes — the crossing of boundary lines between categories of being that God established separately. CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing allows heritable changes to the human germline. Human-animal chimera research is ongoing in multiple countries. The question Genesis asks is not about the goal of these technologies. It is about the boundary: who defines the limits of the category human, and who decides when those limits can be crossed?

HONEST NOTE: The parallel between modern genetic engineering and Genesis 6 is a structural observation, not a prediction or a prophetic identification. This volume does not claim CRISPR is the fulfillment of Jesus's end-times template. What it observes is that the question Genesis 6 raises — what are the limits of the human category, and who decides? — is the same question our biotechnology is now forcing us to answer for the first time since the flood. Whether this is one of the conditions Jesus was pointing to in Matthew 24 is a question the volume raises without answering definitively.

I am not doing anything you are not doing to yourselves. I only showed you what was possible.

The response is not to condemn all genetic research. Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God specifically to create — Exodus 31:1-5. The imago Dei includes the capacity to make, build, engineer, and discover. Medical advances that relieve suffering and honor the human person are Bezalel work. The question is always orientation: are we creating as regents under the King, or as those who have decided the limits do not apply to us?
