Part Four: The Fall as Cosmic Event

The Free Will Question

If God knew the fall would happen — and Revelation 13:8 records that names were written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb since the foundation of the world — why did God make the fall possible?

Because the alternative was worse. A being who cannot choose otherwise cannot love. A relationship in which one party has no genuine capacity to refuse is not a relationship — it is a mechanism. The tree had to be there. The choice had to be real. The possibility of the fall was the cost of love — and God, knowing the cost, prepared the payment before the transaction occurred.

Revelation 13:8

"...everyone whose name has not been written since the foundation of the world in the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was killed." (NET)

The Incarnation was not a rescue plan hastily assembled after an unexpected disaster. It was prepared before the creation itself. The cross was not God's emergency response to the fall. It was God's prepared answer to the question the fall would ask — an answer so complete, so costly, so disproportionate to anything justice alone would require, that it can only be understood as love.

Three texts establish this without dispute. 1 Peter 1:20: 'He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.' The choosing of the Son for this purpose precedes creation. 2 Timothy 1:9: 'This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.' The grace that the cross delivers was prepared before the beginning. Ephesians 1:4: 'He chose us in him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.'

The NET translation note on Revelation 13:8 is worth knowing: the Greek phrase "since the foundation of the world" is grammatically ambiguous. It can modify the immediately preceding phrase "the Lamb who was killed" (the KJV and NIV reading) or the verb "written" (the NET reading, confirmed by the unambiguous parallel at Revelation 17:8). The NET reads the phrase as modifying "written" — names have not been written in the book of life since the foundation of the world. The theological truth — that the Lamb's sacrifice was prepared before the fall, not improvised after it — is fully established by the three undisputed texts above and consistent with Revelation 13:8 on either reading.
