Part Eight: Abiding — The Only Thing That Matters

The Definition That Changes Everything

John 17:3

"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."

Eternal life is knowing the Father and the Son. Not knowing about — ginōskō, the word for intimate relational knowledge, the same word used in Genesis 4:1 when Adam knew Eve. The knowledge that only comes from sustained connection, from the kind of knowing that happens over time and through presence.

This is what the breath of Genesis 2:7 was given for. The breath was given so that the beloved made from dust could know the one who breathed into them. Eternal life is not something the redeemed will receive after death. It is something they have now, to the degree they are abiding. The branch connected to the vine is already living the life of the vine. That life deepens through the sustained practice of remaining.

Light Is Love Seen in Revelation

The God who is Light (1 John 1:5) and the God who is Love (1 John 4:8) are not two different attributes that need to be held in balance. They are the same divine nature apprehended from different angles.

Light is what you encounter when Love turns toward you in revelation. Love is what you find when you stay long enough in the Light to see who is illuminating you. John understood this. He is the one who wrote both statements — the same apostle who leaned on Jesus's chest at the Last Supper, who stood at the cross, who ran to the empty tomb. He wrote those two sentences from the same place: a lifetime of having stayed near enough to the source to know that what illuminates you also holds you.

The image bearer made from dust was given breath so they could know both. The breath was not given for information about God. It was given for knowing God — ginōskō, the relational knowing that only accumulates through presence over time. And what you come to know through that sustained presence is not merely a God who tells the truth, or a God who keeps the universe coherent. You come to know a God who wanted you specifically, who made you from the earth He had been preparing for thirteen billion years, who breathed His own life into your face, and who has not stopped moving toward you since.

Abiding is the practice of living in the reality that the Light you are returning to is Love. Not merely a rule-keeper. Not merely a judge waiting for the books to be opened. The one who is Light is also the one of whom it is written: "So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." The Light runs toward you. That is what makes the abiding not a duty but a homecoming.
