Part Two: The Cultural Pressure Points and the Wrong Responses

9. Moral Drift - When the Church Follows the Culture

The Christian Statement

The opposite error from the confrontational church is the accommodating church - the institution that, under the pressure of cultural change, gradually conforms its teaching to cultural consensus rather than holding the biblical standard. This is the moral drift that Paul warns against in Romans 12:2: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Moral drift in the church produces a specific kind of spiritual casualty that is the mirror image of the person driven away by the confrontational church. Where the confrontational church drives away the person who needed grace, the accommodating church drives away the person who needed truth. The person who came to the church because they sensed there was something different here - a standard, a reality, a God who is not simply a projection of their own preferences - and found instead a community that had followed the culture seventeen years behind schedule, offering a slightly delayed version of what the culture was already providing.

⚠ Stumbling Block: A person comes to church seeking something solid. They find a community that has changed its position on sexuality, marriage, or the nature of sin to align with cultural consensus. They conclude: there is nothing here that I cannot find in a therapist's office or a social justice organization, but with better music. They leave.

✔ The Better Way: The church that has something the culture cannot provide is the church that holds a standard the culture has abandoned. Not for the sake of being different. But because the standard reflects reality - the reality of who God is, who human beings are, what sin costs, and what grace provides. A church that has accommodated itself to the culture has nothing to offer the person who is drowning in the culture and looking for something to hold onto.

The disciple who is part of an accommodating church faces a specific challenge: how to hold the standard personally while being a loving presence in a community that has drifted. The answer is the Tertullian warning: hold the position firmly, express it clearly when appropriate, and do not allow the frustration with accommodation to produce the pride and contempt that drove Tertullian out of the tradition he was trying to reform.

⚠ Tertullian Watch: The disciple who correctly diagnoses moral drift in their tradition is in the most acute danger of this error. The person who is right about the church's accommodation and wrong about their own heart - treating their correct diagnosis as permission for contempt - has already begun the drift that led Tertullian from reformer to sectarian. The poverty of spirit that holds the standard also grieves over the institution that has lost it, rather than standing above it.
