Part Five: Salt and Light - The Alternative to Confrontation
20. Occupy Rather Than Abandon
The Christian Statement
Salt does not work at a distance. It works by contact. A saltshaker sitting on a shelf next to the food produces no preservation, no flavor, no effect of any kind. The salt must be in contact with what it is seasoning for any of its properties to function.
The Christian who has withdrawn from culture - who has built a parallel Christian world of Christian music, Christian schools, Christian businesses, Christian social networks, and Christian entertainment, insulated from the culture they are supposed to be transforming - has placed the salt in a saltshaker and set it on a shelf. They have their purity. They have their fellowship. They have their orthodoxy. And they are producing no effect on the culture around them because they are not in contact with it.
Jesus did not withdraw. He was the friend of tax collectors and sinners - not because He approved of what tax collectors and sinners were doing, but because the only way the salt could work was by being present. "In the world but not of it" (John 17:16) is not a description of withdrawal. It is a description of dual citizenship. The believer is simultaneously a citizen of the kingdom and a resident of the culture, fully present in both, shaped by the first and engaged with the second.
The practical question: where are you not present that you should be? The workplace. The neighborhood. The school. The civic organization. The arts. The political life. The university. Salt in a Christian ghetto is not salt. It is a condiment at a party where everyone already has the same palate.
✔ Salt and Light: Be present where the culture is. Not to be absorbed by it - the warning of Romans 12:2 is real. But to be present. To be the neighbor who is genuinely interested in the neighbor's life. To be the colleague who can be trusted. To be the community member who shows up when something goes wrong. Presence is the precondition of all the rest.
