Part Five: Salt and Light - The Alternative to Confrontation
23. The Believer Who Is Genuinely In the Culture
The Christian Statement
The specific believer this volume is trying to form is not the one who has withdrawn to safety, nor the one who has been absorbed by the culture. It is the one who lives the tension fully - genuinely present in the culture, genuinely shaped by the kingdom, not confused about which is which.
This person is recognizable by specific characteristics:
- They have genuine friendships with people who do not share their faith - not evangelism projects, but friendships
- They are known in their workplace, neighborhood, and community as someone who can be trusted and who genuinely cares
- They hold their convictions clearly and live them visibly without making their convictions the first thing every conversation is about
- They can sit with the person in the LGBTQ+ community, the person who has had an abortion, the person who was abused by a church leader, the person who left the faith because of young earth creationism - and hear their story before saying anything about their own
- They are not afraid of hard questions - about science, about suffering, about the church's failures - because their faith does not depend on having all the answers
- They produce the Fruit of the Spirit in the specific settings where the culture's fruit is most conspicuously absent: patience in the impatient workplace, kindness in the combative online world, gentleness in the culture-war conversation
This person is not a theological superhero. They are a branch that has stayed connected to the vine long enough to bear fruit that the culture around them can taste. And the taste is the apologetic. Before the argument. Before the position. The fruit first.
"My Father is glorified by this - that you bear much fruit and prove to yourselves that you are my disciples."
