Why God Had to Come Down

Now here's the thing that's hard for us to understand: God created you with genuine free will. Real choice. Not programmed obedience. Real freedom.

That's not a mistake. That's the only way family works. You can't have authentic relationship with someone you're forcing to love you. You can't have intimacy with a creature who has no real choice. Family requires the genuine freedom to say yes or no.

But there's a problem with that arrangement, and God knew it from the beginning. The gap between God and humanity is infinite. God is infinite. You're finite. God is eternal. You're temporal. God is perfectly holy. You're... not.

How do you bridge an infinite gap? How do you have genuine relational intimacy when you're separated by infinity?

You can't.

Not from a distance. Not from above. Not from across an unbridgeable chasm.

The only way God could have the family He wanted — genuine relational union with image-bearers who could freely choose to love Him — was to come down. To cross the gap Himself. To enter into our existence, our time, our limitation. To become one of us.

This is why the incarnation had to happen. Not as a rescue mission for something that went wrong. But as the only possible way for God's eternal plan could work.

God didn't need to fix a broken universe. God needed to come close, because relational intimacy requires closeness. Family requires presence. Authentic union requires someone to be willing to cross the distance and say, "I'm here with you. I'm one of you. I know what it's like to be you."

That's Jesus. That's the Word becoming flesh. That's God pressing His face into our face again, but this time not from the distance of creation, but from within creation. Not from above, but standing next to you. Not breathing life into you from outside, but living among you, dying for you, rising to show you that death itself cannot separate you from His love.

This was the plan all along. From before time, God knew this was the only way. The incarnation wasn't an emergency measure. It was love made flesh. It was God saying, "I want you so badly that I will come down and be with you, in your existence, in your time, in your limitation."
