The Upper Room
What Happened Next
What Jesus started in that upper room didn't end there.
He was arrested. He was tried. He was crucified. And in that moment, the disciples must have thought everything was over. Everything He had taught, everything He had promised — it must have seemed like lies.
But then something happened that changed history. Jesus rose from the dead. He appeared to the disciples. And they saw Him alive, transformed, bearing the marks of suffering but completely, undeniably alive.
And in that moment, they began to understand. The relational union He had promised wasn't dependent on Him being physically present with them. It was real and immediate through the Spirit.
Jesus appeared to them for forty days, and then He ascended to the Father. And He told them to wait.
"Wait in Jerusalem for the gift the Father promised," He said. "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you."[15]
The Spirit was coming. The inner presence. The relational reality of God living inside them.
Fifty days later, on Pentecost, it happened. The Spirit came like a violent wind.[16] They felt God's presence, not from outside them but inside them. The Spirit indwelled them. Made them into the family God had always wanted.
And from that moment on, everything changed. The disciples weren't confused anymore. They were transformed. They became what Jesus had made them: children of light. People who carried God's presence. People who experienced relational union with the Father not as a future promise but as their present reality.
And they started telling others. And those others came into relational union with the Father through the Spirit. And they told others. And through two thousand years, that's continued.
Why This Matters for You
You might be reading this and thinking, "That's a beautiful story, but what does it have to do with me?"
Everything.
Because God's plan from before the foundation of the world included you. Not as a means to an end. Not as someone to use. But as someone He wanted. As someone He designed for intimate relational union with Himself.
You were formed by His hands. He breathed His life into you. He pressed His face into yours. From before time, He wanted you to be part of His family.
And the invitation Jesus gave to the disciples in that upper room — it's still open. It's still being offered. It's still the same.
The foot-washing is still happening. The Spirit is still available. The Father's love is still being expressed toward you in the most vulnerable, most intimate, most authentic way possible.
All you have to do is say yes. All you have to do is accept that you can't earn your way into this family, that you can't prove yourself worthy, that all you can do is receive what's already being offered to you.
That's discipleship. That's what it means to be a child of light. It's not about doing something for God. It's about accepting that God is doing something for you. That He came down. That He's willing to be vulnerable with you. That He wants you in His family.
Not because you're useful. Not because you've earned it. But because from before time, God looked at you and said, "I want that one. I want that person to be part of My family."
The Spirit is offering that to you right now. Relational union with the Father. Interior presence. The experience of being known and loved in the most authentic way possible.
That's what the upper room was preparing the disciples for. And it's still available. It's still being offered.
All you have to do is let Him wash your feet. Accept that you can't make yourself clean. That you can't earn your way into the family. That all you can do is receive what a loving Father is offering you.
And then remain in that union. Let the Father's love be your reality. Let the Spirit's presence be your lived experience. Let yourself be woven into the family God has been creating since before time.
This is what you were made for. This is what you've been longing for your whole life, whether you knew it or not.
Come home.
