Preface
Sources and Approach
This manuscript uses:
- Scripture as foundational (Tier 1)
- Ancient Christian and Jewish texts as illuminating witnesses (Tier 2)
- Early Church Fathers as theological guardrails
- The Dead Sea Scrolls as historical context
- The Catholic Catechism and patristic synthesis as protection against heresy
A final note on authority: Sola scriptura is true. But that does not mean you discard the Church Fathers. When the earliest interpreters of Scripture — those closest to the apostles — converge on a reading, that convergence is worth taking seriously. The Reformation broke with tradition, but it did not need to reject the testimony of those who preceded it.
This book recovers that testimony.
How to Read This
Before you read further, name the posture this volume requires. Jesus placed poverty of spirit — the settled recognition that you have nothing you did not receive, nothing to bring, nothing to contribute to your own sonship — as the first condition of the kingdom (Matthew 5:3). This is not the entry point you graduate from. It is the permanent governing posture. The sons of God who fell were not lacking information. They were lacking poverty of spirit. The children of light who rise are not elevated by their understanding. They are adopted in their emptiness.
Read it with your Bible open. Test everything. Keep what is good. The four tests developed in the companion volume Breaking Satan's Lies apply throughout this study. Briefly: the Peace Test asks whether a teaching produces peace that transcends understanding or produces anxiety and restlessness. The Christ Test asks whether a teaching centers on Christ's humility and self-giving or on human exaltation. The Fruit Test asks whether a teaching produces the fruit of the Spirit in daily life or merely information about the Spirit. The Abiding Test asks whether a teaching drives you back to John 15 to stay connected to the vine or into technique and independent activity. Any teaching about the divine council that fails one of these has missed the New Testament's own guardrails.
If a teaching about the divine council does not drive you toward abiding in Christ and walking as a child of light, it has missed the point.
This is Volume II. It is the missing middle between "you are gods" and "you are children of light."
