Chapter 2
Three Streams That Don't Converge (Yet) (1 of 2)
Three answers were offered to the empty seats.
One man ascended and sat beside the throne, given seventy names, crowned with the divine glory — the prototype of human exaltation. One community separated to the desert, sharpened their swords, calculated the Jubilees, and waited for the final war — the prototype of human striving. One apostle wrote: you did not receive a spirit of slavery. You received a Spirit of adoption, and by that Spirit you cry Abba, Father.
One answer made a lesser god. One made a militia. One made a child.
Your mission is not the first two. This chapter will show you why.
My research synthesis identified the problem correctly: we have three separate traditions in Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity that all talk about humans becoming "sons" or "light-bearers," but they do not obviously fit together.
- The Metatron tradition says one man is exalted to divine vice-regency
- The Qumran tradition says a community is appointed as Sons of Light for the final war
- The Pauline tradition says all believers receive adoption as sons by the Spirit
If you read them separately, they compete. If you read them through Christ, they converge. But you cannot see the convergence without first seeing each stream clearly — and honestly admitting where each one, left alone, goes wrong.
Stream 1: Metatron — The Exalted Man
[TIER 2 — ANCIENT ILLUMINATING TEXT] 3 Enoch 10:1-3 "The Holy One, blessed be he, made for me a throne like the throne of glory... and he called me 'the lesser YHWH' in the presence of his whole household."
3 Enoch, written probably in the 5th-6th century AD but reflecting earlier traditions, describes Enoch's transformation into Metatron, the highest angel, the "Prince of the Presence." He is given:
- God's own throne
- God's own Name (the lesser YHWH)
- Authority over all the angels
- A role as celestial scribe and mediator
This is the ultimate fulfillment of Psalm 82's logic: a human does not just replace a fallen son — he is exalted above all sons. He becomes, functionally, a second power in heaven.
What is true in this stream:
- It takes human destiny seriously. God intends humans to rule (Gen 1:26-28, Ps 8:4-6).
- It recognizes that the vacancy in the council must be filled by a human, not just by God acting alone.
- It preserves the Jewish insistence on monotheism by calling Metatron "lesser" YHWH, not equal.
What is incomplete:
- It is exclusive. One man, not many. The rest of humanity remains servants.
- It is dangerous. The line between "lesser YHWH" and second god is thin, and rabbinic Judaism rejected Metatron precisely for this reason.
- It lacks the cross. Exaltation comes through translation (Enoch walked with God), not through death and resurrection.
KEY IDEA: Metatron is a true shadow of Christ — the human exalted to heaven — but he is a shadow without the substance of incarnation and atonement.
Stream 2: Sons of Light — The Appointed Community
[TIER 2] 1QM I:1 "For the Instructor, the Rule of the War. The first attack of the Sons of Light shall be against the lot of the Sons of Darkness..."
[TIER 2] 11Q13 II:7-10 "And the Day of Atonement shall be at the end of the tenth Jubilee... and Melchizedek will atone for the sons of light."
The Qumran community saw themselves as the true Israel, withdrawn to the desert, keeping the correct 364-day calendar, preparing for the final war against Belial and his sons of darkness. Their identity was:
- Predestined by God before creation
- Purified by separation from corrupt Jerusalem
- Organized for battle in strict ranks
- Awaiting the tenth Jubilee when Melchizedek (a heavenly redeemer figure) would atone for them
What is true in this stream:
- It takes Psalm 82's judgment seriously. There is a real war between light and darkness.
- It takes holiness seriously. You cannot be a son of light while living like a son of darkness.
- It preserves the corporate nature of election. God saves a people, not just individuals.
What is incomplete:
- It is sectarian. Only Qumran qualifies. The nations are enemies, not future heirs.
- It is calendrical. Salvation depends on keeping the right calendar and counting Jubilees correctly.
- It is militaristic. Victory comes by the sword, not by the Spirit.
KEY IDEA: Qumran correctly saw that the sons of light must be a community, but they defined that community by separation rather than by mission.
Stream 3: Sons of God — Adoption by Grace
[TIER 1 — SCRIPTURE] Romans 8:14-17 "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!' The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ."
