Completed Cases — Category Three: Theological Polarities
Case 9 — Eternal Security and Genuine Warning
Audience
Calvinist and Arminian readers who have been talking past each other on this for four centuries. Case 2/11 covered the exegetical ground. This case names the theological polarity and carries it to what the abiding life requires.
The Tension
Eternal Security: John 10:28–29: I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. Romans 8:38–39: nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God. The security is grounded in the Giver, not the receiver. Genuine Warning: Hebrews 6:4–6: it is impossible for those who have once been enlightened and fallen away to be brought back to repentance. Hebrews 10:26–27: deliberate continued sinning after receiving the knowledge of truth leaves only fearful expectation of judgment.
What Holding Both Produces
Case 2/11 established that both the Calvinist and Arminian readings engage the text seriously. The theological polarity this generates — beyond the exegesis — is the shape of the abiding life itself. Security without warning produces presumption: the person who believes nothing can remove them from God's hand and therefore gives no attention to whether they are abiding. Warning without security produces performance anxiety: the person who is never sure whether they have done enough. Both distortions destroy the life the polarity is designed to protect. The polarity resolves not at the level of systematic theology but at the level of the abiding life. The person genuinely abiding in the vine is not the person the warnings address. The person the warnings address is the person who has stopped abiding. Security is the promise to those who are abiding. Warning is addressed to those who have stopped.
The Connection to What Matters
Poverty of spirit is the posture that makes both simultaneously available. The person who genuinely knows they have nothing to contribute to their own standing before God — who is not coasting, not presuming, not calculating — is the person receiving the security as ongoing gift rather than past transaction. You do not need to choose between them. You need to abide.
Precedent Note
Case 2/11 contains the full exegetical treatment. This case carries the exegetical ground into the theological polarity, centering what holding both requires of the person trying to live the abiding life.
