Case 1 — The Two Genealogies of Jesus
Audience
Anyone told that Matthew and Luke's genealogies prove the Gospels cannot be trusted. This is a standard Islamic apologetics charge. It also troubles honest believers who read both genealogies side by side.
The Tension
Matthew 1:1–17 traces Jesus's line from Abraham through David through Solomon to Joseph. Luke 3:23–38 goes backward from Jesus through Nathan all the way to Adam. The two lines diverge between David and Joseph. They even name different fathers for Joseph: Matthew says Jacob, Luke says Heli.
The Load-Bearing Assumption
Both genealogies are biological records of Joseph's male ancestry, answering the same question. Remove this and the conflict changes shape entirely.
The Fundamental Point: Joseph Was Not Jesus's Biological Father
Both authors recorded the virginal conception. Both knew Joseph had no biological role. The Holy Spirit is Jesus's father. Joseph is his legal father. The genealogies carry legal and covenantal standing, not biological inheritance. Joseph's act of naming Jesus — the legal act of adoption in Jewish law — gave Jesus full covenantal standing as a son of David. These are theological and legal arguments, not biological records.
Matthew's Genealogy: The Legal Argument for the King
Matthew writes for Jewish readers. He builds his genealogy in three groups of fourteen generations. In Hebrew, every letter has a numerical value: the name David adds up to fourteen. Matthew structured the genealogy around the number that spells the king's name — three times over. It is a legal brief arguing that Jesus is the Son of David. The royal line ran through Solomon. Joseph's legal fatherhood makes that covenantal claim hold.
Matthew's Genealogy and Derived Timelines
Matthew deliberately left out names to achieve his three-groups-of-fourteen structure. Kings who appear in Chronicles are simply skipped. A genealogy that omits generations for theological reasons is not a chronological record. Ussher's 4004 BC calculation was built on treating these genealogies as precise timelines. They are not. Young Earth Creationism depends on that calculation. Both rest on a foundation the text does not provide.
Luke's Genealogy: The Representative of All Humanity
Luke writes for Gentiles. He goes all the way back to Adam, "son of God" — making the point that Jesus is the representative of the entire human family. Many scholars hold that Luke traces Mary's biological ancestry through her father Heli, with Joseph named by genealogical convention. The Nathan line would then be Mary's Davidic ancestry.
Why Not Mary's Genealogy Explicitly?
Ancient genealogical convention ran through men. To trace Mary's ancestry, Luke had to enter through her husband's name. A first-century reader would have understood this. It requires explanation now.
The Two Fathers of Joseph
Julius Africanus (3rd century, in Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 1.7) proposed the oldest known harmonization: Jacob and Heli were brothers; Jewish Levirate law (Deuteronomy 25) required a man to marry his deceased brother's widow; Joseph was legally one man's son and biologically the other's. This has been the standard patristic answer for seventeen centuries.
What Both Together Produce
Matthew gives you the King: the legal heir to David's throne. Luke gives you the Representative: the one who came for every person in Adam's family. Both were needed to hold the full picture.
The Connection to What Matters
Luke's genealogy ends at Adam, son of God. If you are human, you are in that line. The genealogy moves backward through every generation that ever lived — everyone who carried the longing for the relational knowing that was broken when Adam was expelled from the garden. Matthew establishes the King. Luke establishes the Representative. The person who comes to these genealogies in poverty of spirit — who has no bloodline establishing covenantal claim, no heritage granting prior standing — is exactly the person both genealogies address. The legal argument Matthew makes belongs to you through faith, not through birth. The representative Christ Luke traces came for everyone willing to receive him. You are in the line. You need bring nothing else.
Precedent Note
GotQuestions and AiG cover the Levirate law harmonization and the different Davidic lines adequately. What neither engages is the Holy Spirit paternity as the foundational resolution — if Joseph contributed no biological line, the question of which biological line is being traced is already answered differently for each Gospel — or the derived timeline implications for Young Earth Creationism. Julius Africanus in Eusebius (Ecclesiastical History 1.7) is the essential patristic source.
