Completed Cases — Category Three: Theological Polarities
Case 14 — Time and Eternity in Relation to God
Audience
Anyone asking whether prayer matters if God already knows everything. Foundation case for predetermination and Case 3/1.
The Tension
God is eternal and outside time. God also genuinely acts within time, waits, responds. If genuinely outside time, his responses are not real. If genuinely real, is he actually outside time?
The Load-Bearing Assumption
"Outside time" means uninvolved with time. Time Is Created, So Is Science established the alternative: time is a creature. God is the ground time stands on.
What the Corpus Established
Augustine and the cosmological physics of the twentieth century arrived independently at the same point: the world was made with time, not in it. Boethius: eternity is the complete, simultaneous, and perfect possession of unlimited life. Every moment of creaturely time is equally and immediately present to God — not because He looked ahead, but because that time is His creature and He holds all of it completely.
The Predetermination Overlap
If God holds all creaturely time simultaneously, He knows every choice anyone will ever make. Does that negate the reality of the choice? In the present moment a person stands at a genuine decision point. The choice is genuinely open from inside their experience. God knows it not because he looked forward in a sequence but because He holds the moment in which it is made. Knowledge is not causation. Foreknowledge (God knows what you will choose) follows from God's nature. Predetermination (God decided and produced your choice) is a further theological claim that belongs to Case 3/1, not here.
The Tension That Survives
This is a theological polarity. It is not a category error to be dissolved. It survives the test, and the tension may be the point.
Does a God for whom all of creaturely time is simultaneously present genuinely wait and respond? The standard philosophical answer: the language of waiting and responding is anthropomorphism — accommodation of divine action to creaturely understanding. But the biblical text pushes harder than this allows. God hardening Pharaoh's heart is not presented as metaphor. Elijah prays and it does not rain for three and a half years. He prays again and it rains. James 5:17–18 does not say the cessation of rain was a coincidence that Elijah's prayer was adjacent to. It says Elijah prayed and the result followed. That is the language of genuine efficacy.
If both the eternal simultaneity and the genuine interaction are simultaneously true — if God is genuinely outside time as its ground and genuinely responsive within time as its Lord — what does that require? It requires that God's eternal will includes within it the genuine choices of genuine human beings and the genuine responses of a God actually in relationship with those He made. The prayers are woven into the fabric of time that is his creature. The sequence is real. The choices are real. The responses are real. The simultaneity is also real. And the simultaneity does not negate the sequence any more than a composer's complete knowledge of a symphony in his mind negates the reality of the first movement being played before the last.
This is where the polarity is genuinely load-bearing and holding it is the point. The Calvinist tradition emphasizes the eternal decree and must explain the genuine invitation and the genuine response. The Arminian tradition emphasizes genuine freedom and response and must explain Romans 9. The tension is not a failure of either tradition. It is the shape of a reality that exceeds the categories either tradition is working with.
The Connection to What Matters
This is why eternal life in John 17:3 is present tense. It is not a future state to be entered after death. It is a present-tense relational knowing of the Father and the Son that begins now — in creaturely time, in the fabric of time that is God's creature. The believer who abides in Christ is not waiting to participate in eternity until biology fails. The branch in John 15 draws from the Vine now. The Vine is the eternal One, the one for whom all of creaturely time is simultaneously present. The time that is a creature does not separate the human being from the Creator who holds it in being. It is the form of created existence through which the human being reaches toward the uncreated life. And the person who is in Christ is not standing on the outside of that life looking in. It is abiding. The polarity is not a problem to solve. It is the architecture of the relationship. You live in it.
Precedent Note
Stanford Encyclopedia on eternity is the strongest philosophical source. Augustine, Confessions Book XI, and Boethius, Consolation Book V, are the essential patristic sources. Case 1/2 is the most concentrated biblical instance of this polarity.
