Part One: Origins
Section 9: The Living Prophet — Authority Without Accountability
The LDS church is governed by a living President-Prophet who is considered the only person on earth authorized to receive revelation for the whole church. His word supersedes all previous revelation and all institutional precedent. This claim is the structural completion of the Third Excision: once the living prophet's authority exceeds Scripture's authority, Scripture becomes a reference document rather than a governing text.
The practical problem with this authority structure is falsifiability. When a prophet speaks presumptuously or teaches error, the system's standard response is that he was speaking as a man, not as a prophet. But the system provides no mechanism — scriptural, procedural, or institutional — by which a member can determine, in real time and without retrospective revision, whether a given statement carries prophetic authority or merely personal opinion. The Mormon standard for prophecy is therefore invulnerable to testing: a true prophet, by definition, does not say things that turn out to be false. When a prophet says something that turns out to be false, he was not prophesying at the time.
"If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed."
— Deuteronomy 18:22
ERROR IDENTIFIED: The biblical test for a prophet is prospective and objective: if the prophecy does not come to pass, the prophet did not speak for God. The LDS framework inverts this: the prophet is always right by definition, and when he is wrong, it is reclassified as non-prophetic. An unfalsifiable authority claim is not a prophetic authority claim. It is an institutional claim that has insulated itself from accountability by defining error out of existence. The result is an authority structure that cannot be questioned on its own terms — which is not what the biblical model of prophecy looks like and is not compatible with 1 Thessalonians 5:21: "Test everything."
