Part Eight: The Mystery of Romans 11

44. The Fullness of the Gentiles

The Christian Statement

Romans 11:25 contains one of the most significant eschatological statements in the New Testament: "A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in." (NET)

The two-thousand-year history of predominantly Gentile Christianity is not the full story. It is the "until." The Gentile harvest is remarkable — the Gospel has spread to every nation, every language, every culture, and has produced communities of worship on every continent. But it is not the end. It is the means to an end.

The end is Israel's salvation. And the means — the Gentile harvest — is specifically designed to provoke Israel to jealousy. When the fullness of the Gentiles comes in, the partial hardening of Israel lifts. And the restoration that follows is described by Paul as "life from the dead" (Romans 11:15, NET) — the most dramatic resurrection language available.

The disciple who understands this is not merely conducting a personal apologetics conversation. They are participating in the final act of a drama that began with Abraham and will end with the salvation of all Israel. The stakes of this conversation are not personal. They are eschatological.
