Part Seven: Jewish Followers of Jesus — Messianic Judaism

41. The Posture of Messianic Witness

The Christian Statement

The Messianic Jewish witness to the broader Jewish community is conducted with a specific awareness of the history of Christian antisemitism and a specific commitment to not repeating it. The approach of the most effective Messianic Jewish organizations reflects the principles of this entire volume:

  • Acknowledge the history before engaging the theology
  • Work from within the Jewish tradition rather than imposing Christian frameworks
  • Use Jewish sources — Talmud, Midrash, targums — alongside the Hebrew Bible
  • Affirm Jewish identity rather than requiring cultural conversion
  • Conduct the conversation in the context of genuine, sustained friendship
  • Be willing to wait years for a conversation to reach its conclusion

The Adversary's strategy has been to make the name of Jesus synonymous with the name of the persecutor. The Messianic Jewish witness reverses this by making the name of Yeshua synonymous with the deepest and most faithful engagement with the Jewish scriptures and the Jewish heritage. It is the most powerful apologetic available in this conversation.
